I'm pretty comfortable with basic operations and estimating. Not calculus or anything.

I'm pretty good at it. Division is the hardest thing for me to do in my head.

I'm terrible. My school didn't teach it. It was all about math concept and geometry and things like that. We were always allowed to use calculators from 1st grade.

I don't know if my elementary math education helped me or hurt me. I made it through two years of math in college. But if someone asks for a quick estimation on something in a meeting I freeze up. There is nothing happening in my head. I'm really embarrassed by it especially as a woman and a 'scientist'. However, I can rock a calculator!

I enjoy math, but I am terrible at arithmetic!! So embarrassing... but if I have to carry the one in my head when I'm adding two numbers, then I have to really slow down and think it through.

I also suck at multiplying numbers by big numbers like say, 10,000. If I have to multiple 5,432 x 20,000... I have to break it down just to figure it out. So I'll do like 5x20 and then 1,000 x 1,000 and then count up all the zeros to make sure I got it right. Then I'll break out a calculator anyway, just to check my work.

Anyway to compensate for my sad maths skills, I learned a bunch of tricks and memorized a bunch of times tables... so most of the time, I can fool people. But now you know of my shame. If they ever come out with a floating point math coprocessor that you can install in your head, then I am definitely putting that chip in my brain... I don't care if I set off every metal detector for the rest of time!

Anyway are you good at arithmetic? Adding, subtracting, multiplying... can you do it all in your head?
