It's funny. I think I'm like Tina and kinda like Mr. Bee in the sense that I have only handful of close friends that I really invest in, but I have a ton of acquaintances. I think for me, it's easier to keep up with "loose" friendships because I really don't like to let people into my inner circle unless I know they are the "ride or die" type of friend.

I'm extremely good at keeping acquaintances. I have a handful of very close friends, most from childhood (think first sleepovers together and all) so I hold them very near and dear, and I tend to hold everyone else at arm's length. I'm definitely learning a similar lesson as you, Mr. Bee (only investing in close friends and ending up disappointed) and I'm learning how to let other people in.

I tend to over-invest too. At lot of that currently is because some of my previously close friends are turning into acquaintances and it makes me sad :(

Also, I'm from a small town, so I see acquaintances around all the time...previous teachers, friends parents, etc.

Hmm no, I don't think I am that strategic in my friend making although I think that is a great skill to have. I have some friends that are so good at making connections everywhere. I just don't have a knack for it.

I have TONS of acquaintances. Most of my close friends are family members. I have 2 friends at best.

That's what Facebook is good for. I don't comment these days. I just "like" their posts. I personal message my family or friends if it's not general stuff I have to tell them.

I think it's hard enough to try to find time with close friends, so I don't really keep acquaintances.

I am pretty good at close friendships... but I am not very good at having acquaintances.

I tend to over-invest in people, and end up being disappointed. I've gotten a lot better at avoiding this over the years though.

On the flip side, I was really affected by reading Malcolm Gladwell's Tipping Point, where he talked about the power of "weak ties" and how maintaining acquaintances can be good for your career. That helped me see that there's real value in being able to maintain acquaintances, and sparked a change in how I manage my friends and acquaintances.

Over time I've gotten a bit better at this, but I still prefer to spend my time with my close friends and am not so good at keeping up acquaintances. Working on that one...
