Oh goodness I'm terrible! That's partly why I order from fresh direct. They do a much better job of picking than I do.

@Running Elley: I do the swap thing with my DH too. Except I'm the one doing the swapping because he's worse than me! He'll pick like half rotten strawberries and super old grapes. He says they look ripe and delicious.

I'm really bad at both! DH always checks what I pick and then swaps out the unacceptable ones haha

@sandy: Are the Costco ones sweet? I see them all the time but have never bought one! I'm gonna try it next time!

@MamaJ: Thank you for that tip! I always pick the super underripe ones and they're so nasty! I'm going to pull on the leaves next time and hope one of them come off!

@BabyBoecksMom: So pineapples and cantalopes have to be more on the yellow side? What about honeydew? Same?

@T-Mom: Ok! Gonna poke the belly button and see if it's firm or if it as a little give.

This has actually been really enlightening for me. I'm so bad a picking fruit. I'm excited to try some of these tips!

@banana: i've gotten pretty good at picking cantaloupe! I press the "belly button" (not sure what to call it, haha) and if it gives and also is fragrant, it should be pretty decent.

I'm pretty bad at pineapples too.. it's pretty hit or miss.

@banana: For pineapple, I go for the ones that are more yellow than green. I usually have to wait a couple of days before the whole thing turns yellow, but once it does, it's time to cut. I do a similar thing for the cantaloupe.

I used to be horrible at picking out fruits and veggies, but DH has taught me a lot.

For pineapple pull out one of the leaves on the top and if it pulls out fairly easy it's ripe!

I can never pick melons! I just grab one haha.

I'm horrible at picking fruit - watermelon specifically. It's so hit and miss I usually buy those small watermelons at Costco bc they are always super sweet.

I have one place in town that sells the best cantaloupe....anywhere else and it's so underripe.

I'm no help

I'm ok with veggies but I'm horrible at picking the best fruits at our supermarket! Watermelons are pretty easy. I just tap to hear hollowness and try to find one that feels heavy for its size. But I can't for the life of me pick out a good pineapple or cantaloupe! They're always too ripe or not ripe enough (usually the latter).

Do you have any tips for picking the best fruits or veggies?
