I think that taking out however many you want to wat and putting the rest away (out of sight) helps me a lot. Something about the guilt of going back for seconds/thirds/more if I have to get the package out and unwrap the goods and then put it away again. While I was pregnant I ate what I wanted though.

First trimester? No way. I felt so gross I just comfort ate carbs to the point of feeling ill. It got way easier to control second tri, though, and I found I actually missed healthier foods and more reasonable portions.

@blackbird: Yes, I'm trying this out today, I put most of my snacks in the team snack room. Kept one small bag for myself in my drawer. Eating til I'm sick IS the worst!

Yes, when I'm not pregnant I can control myself, pregnant all bets are off. I will eat 2 pieces of cake and still want ice cream ;)

@mrsjyw: Uh yeah. I bought goldfish crackers for E once...and ended up eating the vast majority of the bag. I had to stop buying them and buy myself bland crackers, because they all did the same thing for me (settled my stomach) but weren't as tempting as flavored crackers (goldfish crackers and grahams are my vice in my first tri!).

When i keep stuff like that at work, I do better with an "out of sight, out of mind" policy. So i put it in the cupboards behind me (not the drawer right next to me) and just shake a little out, then put it away. I'm not going to turn around 20 times to keep eating them, versus just reaching my hand into the bag. Can you portion 1/4 cup portions out into little snack bags? Eating until you're sick is the worst feeling.

Now that I am pregnant, portion control- whats that?! Im terrible with portion control. If i have a bite, I want it all. The only thing I can do is to try to not keep bad food. In the house.

When I feel like my sense of portion size is getting out of control, I track calories. It helps me see what I'm filling up on and what has the most calories, and helps me with self-control.

@blackbird: thanks! goldfish crackers! Or even just anything breakfast related usually.

Like this morning, I grabbed a bfast sandwich from our cafe. It wasn't filling enough, so I started munching on crackers I had at my desk. Before I know it, I'm overstuffed and feeling pukey. :( Once I start eating (when I can), I can't stop!!!!

What's your trigger? When I had really bad MS, it would be something like graham crackers for me. I would just keep munching on them (or crackers), and could easily go through a whole package. They weren't filling but they settled better than other foods. Even though i started feeling better half a package ago, I would finish the package. But combo foods always helped me out--a carb and a fat, for example (I had trouble with protein, big time). Just carbs? Didn't get me very far.

So then i started portioning them out and only grabbing what i need and trying to package my snacks up ahead of time. This way, i didn't lose precious prep time when i wasn't feeling well (always led to a disaster). I'd put so many crackers and some cheese slices in a bag, so that I didn't have to plate it all. Just grab and munch. Having ready to eat items always helps me keep it under control.

I also tend to plan my day of food out (i'm past the MS phase, but if i get hungry, i get really sick, really fast, and it takes awhile for my blood sugar to come back up. I just seem more sensitive than normal, and i was like this outside of pregnancy, too)--i know what i'm having for breakfast, then i pack my two snacks and my lunch, and dinner's planned out for the week. I really try to balance my carbs, protein, and fat, now that i'm feeling better. I'm far more satiated, so i benefit in the long run. Then i bring a couple of emergency items in case i underestimated my hunger: I keep almond butter at work, i have apples, popcorn, and trail mix. I also have a few protein bars and little packets of oatmeal. I try to constantly tell myself "if i'm hungry, i can always have more later" because i get kinda sick feeling if i overeat, even if my brain sometimes equates more to better.

anyways. a long answer to a problem i've dealt with often, heh.

I have a kitchen scale that I use to weigh everything. And I often get snacks ready in advance and put them in ziploc bags.

Outside of pregnancy, I was doing really well with food intake and not overeating, getting good amounts of all different kinds of food throughout the day.

These days, I find myself either not eating/no appetite to prevent nausea/ms (from eating) or eating and not being able to stop because my hunger is insatiable!

How do I get better about portion control and eating smaller meals (which no doubt would help with my ms?)
