Oh my goodness, yes. I couldn't imagine living anywhere else. I am in the PNW (a bit south of Seattle, specifically) and it's perfect here. The weather (sure, it rains, but it's generally very mild and summer is so beautiful) is wonderful, we are incredibly close to the water and get to spend summers at the family beach cabin or on our boat. The COL is highish, but it's all I've ever known so I'm used to it. The mountain is beautiful, we are close to family, and it always seems like there's something to do and someone to do it with. Other than college, I've lived here my whole life and still, almost every time I walk outside I think "wow, I am SO lucky I get to live in this beautiful place." The only thing that I would change is about our specific house. i I would love acreage and fewer neighbors. That will come with time! Love love love it.

I am so fascinated by this thread that I went back and read through all the responses about three times now! It's really intriguing to me how so many of you called out N. Carolina as the place you'd want to be. Having lived in the west coast all my life, I know practically nothing about that state. Someone tell me why it's so ideal for so many of you!

I wish everyone would say where they are! I'm curious about all the different places in the country.

I like it ok here. We are in Denver, we live in a residential neighborhood near downtown and I grew up in the suburbs. We moved here from NYC (lived in a few other places before that) and it took me a long time to accept that I wasn't going to move back to Manhattan. I missed it so much. But the cost of living here is reasonable, and our families are relatively close. There are tons of activities available here, outdoor activities and cultural things too, and I hope to discover all of them when I cut back on my 60 hour workweeks. We are open to moving to a different city/state but since I have a decent job, we are really excited about the kids' school, and our families are around, so it is unlikely in the immediate future.

I like where we are (midwest), but I'd love to move to a nearby city with more going on. Our current area is a bit too small townish for me.

Yes. Cost of living is reasonable, small town feel but many amenities of a large city. A major metropolitan city is 4 or 5 hours away.

@mrsjazz: :) I guess we are crazy because we have no family support here. My mother moved from here to a place I don’t want to live, and DH’s parents live somewhere where we don’t want to live either. Coupled with the fact that I am only child whose family all live in other countries, I kinda don’t need to be in the U.S. At least that’s my thinking. ;)

Yes and no. I think people would think we are crazy for wanting to move (actually, people do - haha)... we live in Socal where it's close to beaches and mountains, has great weather year round (though it gets REALLY old celebrating thanksgiving and christmas in 90 degree heat), good job opportunities, a safe neighborhood, with highly ranked schools. The food is amazing here too - there is every single ethnic cuisine imagineable at your fingertips. I can get anything I want within a 10 minute drive. Both our families are here too, both within a 30 minute drive.

That said - the traffic is ridiculous and the population continues to increase, the culture is superficial, and the cost of living is so high. I am also more of a colder weather girl, so I would love to see what the PNW has to offer. I'd love to live abroad too - In Western Europe somewhere, maybe the U.K. or Paris. Another place I'd like to live is Thailand.

@Anagram: I feel your pain...and went through it with a move out to the suburbs. I've found a lot of H**n transplants out here. We kind of bond together and talk about the good old times. But yeah - it just wasn't realistic for us to stay and raise our family there.
Regionally, yes, I'm very happy we live in the northeast, with easy-ish travel to NYC, Boston, DC, and Philly and the options it offers - mountains, beach, etc.
But I can definitely see us moving back to the Philly suburbs where we're both from and where our families are. It's just hard to have kids and not have much of a family support system nearby.

@BKCaribBaby: My DH has said that he will only live in NYC or abroad, no in between.

I have a love hate relationship with NYC. I hate the winters and how expensive it is. I love that we don't have to drive but rush hour commuting is probably stealing some of my life expectancy.

We will be here for the long haul though. We both have great jobs and family here and the opportunities available to our daughter here are amazing. Our dream would be to live here and travel during the summer or have a vacation home. I've always wanted to live in New Orleans so a home there part-time would be awesome. Now to win the lottery.

I live in inner city Portland, Oregon, and I feel so privileged to be here. Oregon is such an amazing place, and Portland is just a fabulous city - there's just so much here, for children, for adults, for being active and enjoying music and food. I just love it. The weather is pretty great, too. The schools mostly suck, that's about my only gripe. I wish I'd taken the chance to live internationally when I was younger and didn't yet have kids, but other than that, Portland is pretty much heaven.

I have a love/hate relationship with where live. The winters are just awful - cold, snowy and everything gets disgustingly dirty from all the sanding the roads. The cost of living is also pretty crazy. The amount of money we make feels like it should go so much further than it does. And without being millionaires, we can't afford to live closer than 30 minutes from where we work.

On the plus side, the job market around here is great. The nearest large city is beautiful and historic, there are lots of beaches, and lot of cute towns to walk around in. I also love our house and I like how close we are to a giant amount of tax-free shopping. We also have DH's family nearby and my family is about 3 hours. I also love that MA is very liberal and that we led the way for things like gay marriage and Universal Healthcare.

At one point though we were really tempted to move to NC. I love the idea of a more temperate climate, and it seems like NC has a ton of newer suburbs with great amenities like walking trails and pools and playgrounds. That just doesn't seem to exist here.

I love where I live.....southern CA (South Orange County specifically). It is family friendly, clean, safe, and the schools are good. Plus our families live only an hour away in each direction. The only downside is it's expensive!

Yes, I love it. I wish it were less expensive though. NYC is beyond expensive, and I am amazed at how expensive it continues to become. The area immediately around my building is going through a lot of change, and I wonder how it will affect our neighborhood. That said, I feel lucky to live where we do.

I would love to leave the U.S. and live in Europe, but DH would never do it.

@photojane: SW Virginia is so pretty too! I'd love to live there if the coal miners wouldn't hate us so much. I have family that lives in Stafford and I love it there in Central VA too. But my husband was born and raised in Kentucky and he's never going to leave, so I should stop dreaming.

Where I live now is at the bottom of places I'd live if I had a choice. I've never seen a dirtier or uglier city, or a city where so many people beg in the street and so many more are enjoying their fancy sushi next door. And I've lived in three other cities and visited plenty more. Just hoping my kids will get out of here when they're grown up! My neighborhood is one of the nicer ones though, it has a great beach and fresh air and is really not bad once you've been here for a while and get used to the place.

no. we just moved for my husband's job a few months ago and while i've met some nice people and i'm so happy he finally has a job he's been working towards for years, i can't see us here for more than a couple of years. we're still far from our families, now far from the beach and it's too much suburbs for me, which i never realized was an issue. but i miss being able to walk to coffee or the beach, or food or the post office or pick up something quick from the local market. we lived in the suburbs before, but they were walkable. i'm accepting that this is part of our long term goals, so i'm trying to keep positive about it, but i really miss our old town because even though we didn't have family right there, we had friends that we could count on!

I really like living in the suburbs of Atlanta. We still have the suburbia feel, but we have access to everything the big city has to offer. Atlanta has pretty darn good weather (at least in my opinion) almost year-round. And for being near a big city, the cost-of-living is very affordable. Plus we are close to both of our families.

Yes and no here in Houston too. The standard of living is great, there are so many job opportunities, I love the weather and the culture, there are so many amazing restaurants, and I have great friends here. My suburb is nice too. But like others have mentioned there is so much traffic and it's not a pretty city. I miss living in the country and I miss my family. I'm glad we moved here 7 years ago because it did great things for dh's career and our relationship. It put us in a location with some of the best doctors when we needed them. We're both ready to move on now though.

I go back and forth, mostly depending on season. We are in Boston, and I absolutely love it during the warm months since there are so many fun things to do. Plus our family all lives within an hour's drive, there are lots of job opportunities here, and there are many great school systems nearby.

When winter comes, I always feel trapped and I hate it. I think about how insanely expensive it is to live up here and how I wish our families had settled in a warmer place. I worry about moving to the suburbs to find better schools for LO and ending up with a monster commute and a crazy mortgage.

Luckily it's finally spring here, so I'm in a good mood about it today. :)

Mostly. If I could move back up north and take my family, friends and job with me, I would. Given that that's not really going to happen, I make my peace with living in a state with a lot of whackadoo nutjobs who make me feel less safe.

I like where I live. It's a major city, but isn't as huge as NYC or Los Angeles. I live in a more suburban area, but I'm still only 20 minutes away from downtown which is full of great restaurants, shopping, museums and other fun things to see/do. We also get all the big name bands for concerts and Broadway plays for entertainment. The city is family friendly, has a moderate temperature, and is located a few hour drive from either the mountains or the beach.

Yes and no. I like the access that we have to DC and better paying jobs, but I hate the commuting and COL.

I'd prefer to live closer to my family, but there are so many fewer job opportunities out there and not as much to do. My DH would go crazy in a smaller town.

@travellingbee: Yes, exactly. There are a lot of things I love about Houston, and TBH I never expected to enjoy living here so much. But there are certain things I miss, like pretty scenery. And especially pretty fall scenery and the changing leaves and...yeah. We took a road trip this weekend a few hours away, and I was like, "Wow, look -- beautiful hills and trees everywhere!" haha. I do not really miss the cold though!

@lawbee11: And yes, this too. Don't even get me started on what they did this week... ;-)

I live in a really good place. It is safe, has outstanding schools, and is very very very family friendly, progressive, and somewhat diverse. It is also insanely beautiful and a very outdoor city. Good research medical University, great hospitals. Constantly ranked top 5 best places to live in US. Lots of opportunity. However, the weather. Oh, the weather. It is a wonderful place if you can handle the weather! Coldest place on earth! And then the wettest, and then the hottest. And then the coldest. I have a great affinity for it here, the skies are the best and the lakes are beautiful and I love the hills. Every few years we get to live abroad for a month, that will have to satiate me. I have lived many places, so it is nice to feel like I finally have a home.

I would consider moving somewhere warmer, but I always hope to stay near my kids. So, I kind of like feeling like I have a home base for them.

I like where I live at the moment (Salt Lake City). It is strangely diverse, lots of outdoor activities, weather is nice, and my family is close, so I can't complain :) However, thinking longer-term, my husband and I plan to stay here the next 5 years or so, and then think about moving back closer to where he is from...which is Ecuador. So far away, ha! I lived there for 4 years, and I really do miss it, and I think that we could have a very comfortable life there. So I will spend the next 5 years here thinking about how, exactly, we can pull that off :silly:
