I think so, yes. Although most stuff about my dad I would hear from my mom, I don't think he'd tell me anything directly so as not to worry me. He downplays health issues anyway, even to himself.

Mine hide it from me until they need to use it to manipulate me. And then somehow it's my fault I didn't know because I don't call every few days...?

I work in medicine and both my parents keep me up to date on their health so I can give my opinion. DH's parents are secretive.

My parents, yes, but they are generally healthy. I don't know specific details, but they fill me in on important stuff.

DH, not at all. His parents are older than mine and he is the youngest of his siblings by a lot. I think his parents and his siblings still think of him as the baby and tend to shield him from stuff. Like Finfan, there have been multiple occasions where he has found out about something randomly in passing after the fact - eye and foot surgeries, knee replacements, cancer biopsies, etc.

Let's put it this way: my dad once texted me to tell me his shoulder surgery went well. I didn't know anything was wrong with his shoulder and it was not an emergency surgery.

No, but I think they have pretty run of the mill getting older issues though. They are adults and they're capable of handling their medical issues on their own. But if there were signs of dementia or life threatening issues, I'd want to be kept in the loop.

Yes, they both tell me what's going on and the treatment plans, if any, the doctor's or specialists have them on. In the last 3 years or so I'don't say they are seeking out medical care more and proactively trying to be healthy.

Yep, very much so. My dad is going through tinnitus right now. He's always been very healthy, but this is the first time that he's been plagued with something like this.

With my mom, I've always been in the loop about her medical status. One summer during college, I stayed home and took care of her post surgery instead of doing an internship or classes. She's had a few surgeries since then. It's tough for me not to be there since I've attended to her post surgery before.

My mom shares pretty freely, but my dad not so much. I'd say DH's parents are also upfront.

I am more now that i'm older and we've been through more.

When we were younger, our parents wanted to "protect" us from worrying about them. But once we stood up to them and told us we'd rather know more about what's going on than just get bad news all of a sudden, they opened up to us more. (but we've also dealt with both parents having cancer, one terminal, so I'm sure that's changed everyone's perspectives on things)

Not at the beginning! My parents always just mention something so casually randomly and I'm like what?!?!

My mom is pretty up front with me about any issues, although she would probably find out as much info as she could before worrying me.

My dad was the total opposite and had some major health issues that eventually led to him passing away and was very secretive about them. He was single and I was his only child and he didn't want to worry me, so he told me things were fine to pacify me, but I really wish he would have been up front. I had no idea what was truly happening until it was too late and was left to make medical decisions for him.

I am definitely not in the loop because my Dad is so darn secretive about his health. (Kidney issues) I have to force out information from my brother or mom. Sigh!
