My husband invests 10% of our income, after fully funding his 401k each year. We don't contribute to any new IRA--we have a few older ones. He has accounts with Vanguard and Fidelity. Because of his job, he's only allowed to do mutual funds--no day trading or anything like that.

Separately from that money, we have a 6 month emergency fun in a money market account, in case an emergency happens like job loss.

I am not involved in any of this-- my husband was doing it all before we married, so he continues to do it all now. I wrote a thread about 6 months back about how I wanted to be more involved, but life has gotten in the way and I still haven't done anything.

We have investments through Charles Schwab. I actually just finally set it up to make recurring investments. I went through Schwab based on advise from friends and mentors at work. Then it was a matter of researching funds I wanted to invest in. Schwab has some good advice on how to diversify, and after the initial setup, it's been really easy. Plus once you have invested a certain amount, you can use their financial advisers for free.

Me and both kids have what our FP calls a glorified savings account - its a fund thru Franklin Templeton - we can get money out in an emergency in 2 business days.
Obviously rates vary year to year but last year it got us a 20% return!

So I ended up putting all our savings (besides emergency fund) into a managed fund... My IRA currently is with ML and one time when the guy was reviewing my portfolio we got to talking about this and afterwards I felt comfortable enough to do it... I had just made sure a certain amount was always liquid that I could take out in some crazy emergency.

@IRunForFun: I just got a referral from a friend and the guy said that consultation is free. I'd def go for a consultation to see if this is the best way to proceed. If they are nice, I think they would tell you whether or not it's worth it for you to pursue too... I will def update you on what we end up doing! This is all in my head for now, I still need to discuss w/ DH.

DH and I are just starting to look into this and we're finding it daunting. The financial adviser at our credit union actually was fairly helpful, but still, SO MANY CHOICES. I am not sure if we'd go the route of hiring a financial planner, though, because it seems like the amount we make/would invest isn't high enough to warrant paying for that.

All savings are in a Vanguard managed fund. It earns about 11% return annually, the fees are low and I don't do anything (they make the decisions for me on stocks/mutual funds/whatever things)

@snowjewelz: I would find someone (preferably a CFP) who can do a financial plan for you. They'll be able to look as your assets, your income, your financial goals, and your risk tollerance to come up with a saving/investing plan and an ideal allocation.

@Freckles: I def need real help; I studied about this stuff so much at some point and was close to signing up but then I just wasn't confident enough & was too afraid of the risks. I'm so conservative I need someone to kick me into action haha

@MamaMoose: I don't have any; except for the guy that does my IRA account, which I will be retiring from when I move that money to my new company's 401k later on. I really just want someone to tell me how much I should invest out of my savings, in what, and manage it for me!

My younger, responsibility-free sister invests purely in stocks. She goes through a brokerage and his commission is a % off of her earnings.

If you're a bit wary of the bank's financial advisors, i would look into a fee based advisor. I asked my bank's financial advisor straight up if she gets any sort of compensation by recommending a fund and was comfortable with her answer.

DH and I do self-directed investing, but it does require some extra homework on your part!

Something that I regret not doing when I was younger was investing my "nest egg". I'm super conservative and pretty just sat on a sum of $ year after year. It used to be better; I earned good interest with a high yield savings accounts but now interest rates are next to nothing.

I try and try to get into stocks and investments but I just don't have the brain cells for it  I have a financial adviser w/ my IRA but he doesn't really help me w/ my other $. I was interested in contacting the financial adviser at my bank, but I read that they just try to sell products or specific funds to you.

If any bees invest their money aside from retirement, how did you get started? Who did you get advice from, if anyone?
