Yes and no. I know that what I do is important work, but most people don't see it that way. If I were to actually lay out for people what I do they would likely (and do) change the subject or just say something like "Oh." So I tweak my title and make it broader. I'm proud to say who I work <i<for though! I love my company so, so much.

@lilteacherbee: It's hard for people to recognize a curriculum that doesn't look like pre planned books in the age of nclb. Your job is so important!

I am a SAHM til July. I was just meh about my last very brief job and will be happy to tell people about the job I will go to, although I don't know if proud is the word since I wouldn't have even heard of the job if not for family business. As for being a SAHM if I'm being completely honest it's something that's meaningful to me but I'm not necessarily proud of it. I'm not ashamed of it but not that proud either. Idk how to explain the feeling!

@Mae: @LindsayInNY: I agree. Proud of it in title and that I achieved it by age 24, but beyond that, I'm rather "meh" about it. Half the time it's me also explaining that I am not a secretary AT a firm, but I'm part OF the firm.

Maybe when I'm older and the loans are gone…*dreams*

Very proud! I {use to} work with banking software as a software consultant so I help train bank staff how to use our software. I have to work with programmers to QC the software and implement design features. I am a SAHM until May-ish.

I don't love what I do all the time, but I'm proud of being a broadcast journalist. I also think people probably believe it's more exciting than it generally is, haha. I also love saying what my H does, because his job is really cool. He works for a pro sports team in our city :-)

I think so, but I also am in a weird in between phase.

I trained as an elementary teacher, taught intermediate (11-13 year olds) in New Zealand for a couple of years, before moving to Japan to teach English for 3 years. I recently arrived in the US (August) and my work permit is still being processed, so I figured it is as better time as ever to get my MEd. I started my thesis recently, and now up and coming LO is delaying my getting back into the classroom - I was hoping to have my work permit and certification to teach in the next school year - DH and I were planning on moving to a state with more jobs to do so, but I am due September, so it's a no go.

I am proud of what I do, and my thesis topic, but I also hate having to effectively start all over again in a new country - I guess that's less about not feeling proud, and more an anxiety that I won't be able to get back on my feet. I am itching to get a new class so bad.

I also dream of research and policy though, one of the reasons I chose to go the thesis route.

It depends on who I'm talking to, really. Some people are positive and interested and others are like "Oh awesome, aid work huh? So is it like the peace corps where you can just party all the time and you get to like travel the world and drink international beers?"

And then I raise my eyebrows and say "No. Not even a little bit like that."

@Elderberrygin: yay, hi! Congrats on almost being done-from where I sit, that is a long way off, so it's nice to know it's not just a magical fantasy land that everyone talks about but doesn't actually exist :silly: I'm sorry about the "how much did you get done?" question. It turns out that this isn't a linear process, and it's hard to convey that sometimes. Like, just because I have 30 pages written doesn't mean I won't delete 15 of them the next time I sit down (unfortunately  ) And I agree, sometimes, it's just easier to avoid the "what do you do?" conversation all together!

@nana87: @lovelyplum Yay! Its nice to see some other PhD students on hellobee! I'm in my seventh (hopefully final) year and its only now that I have an external fellowship at a research institution that has some level of name recognition that I don't have to spend fifteen minutes explaining what I do and when I'm finishing and what a PhD entails before I even get near thinking about whether I'm proud to tell people what I do. Once I'm done with all that explaining, half the time I get "Har, har, so I guess you'll be flipping burgers when your done." The joys of being in the humanities.

I can totally commiserate on the "When will you be done?" questions. My mum and dad have asked me how much of my dissertation I have written this week during our weekly phone calls for the past FOUR YEARS. They don't seem to understand the fieldwork and research part of my job at all.

Short answer. I'm proud of what I do. But sometimes I feel like making up a random job when I'm asked what I do so I don't have to have the same conversation over and over.

@rahlyrah: I feel the same way you do. I love being a SAHM (although I also know I would've loved working in my chosen career path as well -- speech language pathology) but I hate discussing it with former classmates and college friends because I feel like they think I am "just" a mom which, I guess, technically I am but it kind of hurts because doing this is a sacrifice to me personally, career-wise. So I just avoid the topic entirely.

@nana87: right. And I hate to break it to them that my first few jobs will more than likely be post-docs or one year visiting professorships or adjunct positions at a tiny branch campus in the middle of nowhere, and then if I'm REALLY lucky, I *might* get a tenure-track gig somewhere. That usually makes people nervous enough to stop asking questions :silly:

@.twist.: Oh man, I am in the same boat as you. I envy people with passion so much. If I could go out and do anything I wanted today and know I wouldn't fail, I wouldn't have a clue where I would start. I think it wouldn't have anything to do with working, though. I feel like I could be an awesome billionaire heiress. Ha ha. :)

@LovelyPlum: ahhhh yes, the "when will you be done" question!! I usually say something simple like "I'm in my 4th year, and usually it takes people in my program 7 years, so about 3 more years." but lately it's been more complicated--people, including my parents and in-laws, ask when we're moving out of NYC (since we don't want to live here forever), but I have no idea--it depends on if I teach on campus past my set fellowship, or if I get external write-up grants which mean we could move somewhere else. Except moving sucks and I'd rather not move multiple times, and we'll most likely have to move multiple times for jobs/post-docs later....So I just get flustered and overwhelmed when they ask, haha
