We are 3 hours from my family and 12 from his. I grew up far from family, my parents were military so there wasn't a choice. I guess it just feels normal to be away from family.

Honestly, I like it. We can make the best decisions for our family with zero input from anyone else. Our families only know what we choose to tell them. We have the freedom to make our own life with our family and not worry about what anyone else thinks.

It does have its challenges, we have to look outside the family for childcare, we have to travel to see relatives, etc. but since it's how I grew up, I don't really have anything different to go by.

@regberadaisy: We live in Portland, Oregon which is pretty pricey, but thankfully, it's green and an amazing place to raise babies.

I think we will be able to budget flying back home twice a year. It's just stressful, as you can imagine ... kids + pet hotel + travel ... But, it's really nice to hear that you're making it work, and it sounds like knowing you're giving your babies the best life is worth the distance!!

awww I'm sorry. :( My family isn't quite that far -7hr drive- but it was definitely a hard decision. I struggle with it still daily even though I know we made the best decision for our little family. It helps knowing that here will enable us to raise our kids the way we want to. We want to give them big backyards with swing sets, playhouses, trees to climb in etc. We really can't (afford to) do that in NYC!

We deal with it by going to visit quite often, probably 3x + each year and they come visit us as well. FaceTime helps a tons too!

Any chance you can budget in yearly trips home?

I am newly pregnant (hormones are raging, poor hubby), and today I realized that we'll be raising our baby over 2,000 miles from our family. I got overwhelmed, but I know we aren't the only ones. I'd love to hear some good parts & how you deal with the distance.
