Yes I feel much better now. I think I have a better understanding of Rh and what I thought may have been happening is not. Thank you all who shared. Rh is a interesting component very few of us have to deal with. Its better to ask questions & understand what it's about so thanks again ladies

@jh524: ok got it now! sounds like you should be all good then :goodluck: my DD is a + so I definitely had the shot after she was born, and I also had another shot when I had a miscarriage last year.

@jh524: Because you're - and your husband is + you will get a shot during each pregnancy just in case. Then after delivery they test the baby within 72 hours. If baby is - you don't need a shot because you're compatible, if baby is + you'll get one more shot.

@IRunForFun: ok I think I'm understanding this.... unless i was exposed to + would I need the shot, correct? So if I have a future pregnancy that's positive , would it be an issue without that shot?

Thanks for all the info ladies!!! Xoxo

@mrscobee: ok. I'm understanding this now. So what if I get pregnant with a positive, just would need one during pregnancy is what it sounds like from the other gals.

Your body wouldn't create antibodies to a positive pregnancy unless It had been exposed to rh positive blood during pregnancy or birth. Correct

@DesertDreams88: I looked at my records and it shows a screening and said the antibody results as negative so I'm not sure if I received the shot after delivery. If my lo was negative should I still have received one? It could potentially cause complications with a rh positive pregnancy if i didn't get it if Im understanding this correctly.

@DesertDreams88: it concerns me as well ! I'm definitely looking into the blood sensitized issue. And checking into it ASAP. It may not have had anything to do with this wacky cycle but it's worth looking into! Thank you for your info.!

I'm a little overwhelmed by all the questions so I'll just post my bit :)

I am O-. Both my girls are positive (though I obviously did not know that until they were born!). I did not have bleeding with either pre-labor.

With both, I got the Rhogam shot around 26-28 weeks (fuzzy now) and again after delivery (the next morning) when it was discovered they were both positive blood types.

A couple of thoughts, as DH and I are Rh incompatible and it freaks me out too sometimes...

1. You should have gotten your rh shot within 72 hours of delivering your first child. Most doctors now like to do it sometime in the early third trimester before delivery in case of premature birth, and after delivery.

2) If you never got the shot with your previous pregnancy, it's my understanding that now you are sensitized and it could cause complications in future pregnancies (but it should not prevent pregnancy, just complicate it). As a pp said, you can be tested for sensitization. I totally understand your concern and hope that if you get tested, it shows you're not sensitized.

2) When I had concerns about a chemical pregnancy/early loss causing sensitization, my nurse practitioner told me that wouldn't be and issue at all, not until the pregnancy weren't further developed along like 5 or 6 weeks. The main issue is your blood mixing with the baby's blood, which would take some basic development.

@jh524: I have had three C-sections and I am RH-
With my first pregnancy I got the shot at 28 weeks, C-section at 40 weeks 6 days, shot again after delivery because baby is RH+
Second pregnancy, I had a SCH, so I got the shot early, then again at 28 weeks, C-section at 37 weeks 1 day (my water broke), baby is RH- so no shot at delivery
Third pregnancy, a little bleeding in the beginning, so I got the shot early, again at 28 weeks, C-section at 39 weeks, shot at delivery because baby is RH+
Fourth pregnancy, shot early because of bleeding and I'm 11 weeks 1 day along and everything is looking good.

Have you ever had the shot? With my first I did have some early bleeding, but I never told the doctor and didn't know I was RH- at the time and I haven't had any issues conceiving.

@jh524: I'm a bit confused so please forgive the dumb questions - did your doctor give you any shots during your previous pregnancy? or after the delivery? If they knew you are rh-, it seems odd that they didnt take that precaution unless its on record that your partner is also rh-.

I am rh-. If you are worried that you developed antibodies, the doctor can do a blood test to see if you are sensitized. I am currently going through Ivf and the dr just did that and mine actually came back positive (meaning I am, although most likely mine is left over from the shot I got during my miscarriage 3 months ago). I am not sure what it means (if anything) for ttc, although they would not do a fresh transfer with the results that way, but that could just be to avoid pregnancy complications. Anyway, if it would make you feel better, you could definitely ask for that test so you know ahead of time if you have any hurdles.

An Rh incompatibility would not cause problems in an early pregnancy. Mother and fetus do not share blood systems and the problem with incompatibility stems from blood mixing. Blood mixing can happen if a small amount of blood from the fetus crosses the placenta into the mother's system, but as early as 4 weeks into pregnancy, there wouldn't even be a placenta yet. It can also happen if the mother had an amnio, CVS, or bleeding of unknown origin during the pregnancy.

Regardless, if blood tests are negative when AF is just a few days late, the chances that you are pregnant are slim to none so I wouldn't bother yourself worrying about the Rh issue.

@jh524: a chemical pregnancy is an early loss, before the baby can be seen on ultrasound. So around 4-5 weeks. You do get positive HPTs with them.

I don't think you can have issues with a second pregnancy until the baby starts making their own blood cells, and even then it's rare if you got the Rhogam shot at delivery. So it probably wouldn't cause problems in early pregnancy. You could probably ask your doctor to give you a blood test for antibodies though, to be sure the shot worked...

I'm RH- and had a chemical pregnancy after IVF last year. I did not get a rhogram shot then. My next embryo transfer was successful and I haven't had any bleeding with this pregnancy. I'll be getting my shot next month.

I don't think your body would have attacked an early pregnancy. Your body starts producing hcg very early and the blood test would have picked up a trace amount. I know it's frustrating to have a wonky cycle. Hopefully next month is better!

The day I had a positive test I also had some spotting so I called the midwife practice and asked if they could squeeze me in for a rogam shot that day, they did and 12 weeks later everything is fine.

Call your dr about your concerns, I had a chemical pregnancy a few years ago,but still got positive pregnancy test results. Could just be a weird cycle.

Also, I thought high white blood cells in the pelvis meant you had a UTI, so I'd ask someone about that.

I am rh- and had a cesarean, my daughter was rh+. I received several rhogam shots due to spotting/bleeding throughout pregnancy and then one after birth. To my knowledge (I'm not a doctor, this is just info I've come across in my own researching) being rh- doesn't affect TTC but having rh incompatibility can cause issues with the baby if antibodies were formed in an earlier pregnancy. I believe a rhogam shot is only needed when there is potential for bloods to mix during pregnancy, so not prior to ttc. I really would ask your doctor these questions though.

I'm rh- and I had to get the rhogam after miscarriage, during pregnancy, and after delivering. Not prior to conceiving. I'm not a doctor, but with negative hpt and blood tests it doesn't sound like you are pregnant, sorry. :bummed: did you ask your doctor what the swap results mean?
