@leeenie: I would talk to them about better toy sanitizing. Ours has the same practice that once a toy is out and in a mouth it goes into a "dirty" bin and is put through the washer over night. I know they did this because I was always the first one there and watched them put away toys each morning.

However this toy cleaning did not include things like books and larger toys. It also didn't include the covers of swings or bouncy chairs.

I know one mom that brought in her own toys for her LO and asked that they be used just for her child.

I'm not sure either -- LO is so young so I just see what goes on in his room, they use gloves during diaper changes and wash their hands as much as they can. But I do agree that a super sterile place is not necessarily a great thing. MIL used to boil DH's toys after play dates and when he got into nursery school he was sick ALLLL the time. He had strep throat so many times that when he got his tonsils out finally, the doctor said he had the tonsils of a 50-year-old man!

I just think there's only so much they can do at a center. But the frosting thing is pretty disgusting -- I'd probably complain about that.

I have no clue what the sanitary practices are at our daycare. I'm really not picky though, I'd rather expose her to germs to build up some immunity than have her in a super sterile environment.

I'm just following this because this is part of the reason lo isn't in daycare for now... Just know in the long run it will help build your lo's immune system. SO much easier said than done though! ;)

@regberadaisy - I've been there at snack time and play time and watched them not do these things. The last sickness my son got, he had a fever for two whole weeks and and a lingering phlegmy cough and runny nose for another week. It was awful!

@t-mom - I'm not sure if they wipe things down at the end of the day because I usually pick up LO early. They do wipe the tables after eating, at least. But there are way too many toys to feasibly sanitize all of them every day.

Hm, I think your center definitely could be cleaner. The only reference I have is our day care- the children wash hands with soap before meals. The teachers wear gloves when serving food (as well as diaper change and wiping noses). The toys get sanitized every day and the toy is put away from reach of kids if it goes in the baby's mouth. Do you ever see them wiping down the room at the end of the day? I see our teachers wiping down glass on doors, door knobs, common surfaces at the end of the day.
Day care is for sure very germy and my kids were sick a LOT until 18 months. But it sounds like your day care could be a little more rigorous in maintaining their standards?

How do you know they don't do half these things?

I was unsatisfied with the fact that they wore shoes on the carpet in the infant room so I wrote the director an email. They started a new policy of no shoes on the carpet!

I think if anything is a concern you should bring it up to the director. It's inevitable our kids will get sick while in daycare. Kids are sneezing & coughing, putting toys in their mouth and swapping germs. My ped said its rougher when a older kid starts daycare vs when they are younger.

I am concerned that your son has been sick for 2 weeks at a time multiple times! Is it a cold then lingering cough/running nose? Or is he really sick for 2 weeks?

I think they are supposed to wash the toys if a kid puts it in their mouth, but I don't think this actually happens. They have bins full of toys that the kids play with on the floor, and then they get out away for next time. I think the classroom gets cleaned once a week, but I don't think it makes a difference because the kids at always touching the same toys, the tables and books and there are always sick kids at school.

Honestly it sounds about normal for a center. It sucks sure. The only thing ours does is wear gloves to serve food. They also wear gloves for diaper changes.

What is their toy washing/classroom cleaning practice?

Since starting daycare four months ago, my 2 year old has been out sick at least 50% of the time, and has caught three or four bad virus taking hi out for two weeks at a time. As soon as he returns, he gets immediately sick again. I'm wondering if this has to do with my daycare's questionable hygiene practices. These include:

- Not washing hands immediately before eating - they wash hands, then go sit on the floor before eating (of course this means they all touch the floor).
- Not always using soap to wash hands.
- Washing the kids' hands and faces one after another without washing off the teacher's hands in between.
- Not using gloves to give the kids snacks (always finger foods, so they are touching the foods), and the teachers not always washing their hands before doing this.
- And, most seriously disturbing which I witnessed today: while giving the kids cupcakes (for a birthday), one teacher licked frosting off her fingers and continued serving the cupcakes to the kids. Gag.

Otherwise, the teachers are really great, but these hygiene practices (or lack thereof) really disturb me. Admittedly I am a germaphobe, but I don't want LO exposed to more than he has to be, and there is domes bad stuff out there. (Not to mention when kids go to school when they clearly shouldn't because they are sick.)

Is your daycare cleaner? Do they do any of these things?
