@PointeShoesTutus: We did a fibro outreach last semester; there is still so much about the disease that is a mystery, but I would NEVER call a fibro patient a wimp about pain! It's a difficult thing to live with. I loved treating our fibro clients, they appreciated massage so much more than most!

I'm not a fan of massages that leave me sore the next day. Ever since I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, I've become a total wimp about pain.

DH, on the other hand, thinks the only good massage is the one that leaves you super sore two days later. But he is a crazy man though

@PermaStudent: thank you for saying something about the "clearing toxins" bs. DH refuses to believe me when I say it's a bunch of hooey!

Nope, I'm not a big fan of deep tissue massages. The most intense massage I'll get are Thai massages.

@PermaStudent: Thanks for the info! I'm a nurse and I totally bought it. I figured it had to do with muscle breakdown or something. Sounds a little crazy when i put it in writing :)

@Alivoo01: Unfortunately some MTs continue to encourage the myths, although usually not intentionally! Some just haven't updated their education in a while, because there is a ton of evidence out there now that falsifies all that toxin/lactic acid stuff.

If you Google "Massage lactic acid myth" or something similar, you'll get a ton of hits, some easier to read (and more trustworthy) than others.

http://www.indoorcyclingassociation.com/blog/?p=1873

@MrsF: The water thing is a total myth as well ;) Usually related to "clearing out toxins" or some sort of BS like that. Don't get me wrong, staying hydrated is super important, but you don't need to drown yourself in water after a massage any more than you would after walking up a flight of stairs.

@PermaStudent: interesting! I sort of believed that too! They have told me to drink a lot of water afterwards - is that part of the myth?

@Alivoo01: The lactic acid thing is a myth that will not die!

I'm almost finished a 3 year massage therapy program in Canada... feeling sore is totally normal! It's usually related to microtrauma that has occurred at the level of muscle, fascia and other tissues that were manipulated during the treatment.

I like to feel sore if I'm going regularly and want them to be tough. If I just want to relax, I don't like to push hard enough to get me sore.

Yup because they work out all the lactic acid. I'm always super tired/sleepy afterwards too because I don't hydrate well.
