I have worked in NICU for 6 years, and I have never heard this, and never read it in any safety pamphlets or articles (and trust me, we have dozens lying around).

In fact, as long as you supervise all pet/baby interaction, it is recommended to introduce them early, and often in a controlled manner, so that they get accustomed to each other.

Yes, you are, though I also forget how long. My cat likes to curl up on people's chests, and he adores babies (he gets angry at me if he hears a baby cry, and purrs if he hears a baby laugh.) However, a baby can't handle a cat sleeping on it.

ETA: My pets won't be 100% separated from my babies, but they WILL be closely supervised, and the cats will be locked out of baby's room at night (whether it's our room or a nursery).

I've never heard this, and we have been actually encouraged specifically NOT to do this when we bring home baby so that our dog gets used to her, accepts her as part of the family, and doesn't feel resentment towards her.

Someone told me that you're suppose to keep your pet/dog away from your newborn for a specific period of time...? She forgot how long though. Have you heard this or did you do this? How long are you suppose to keep your pet away?
