I'm pretty trusting, however when it comes to being home alone and the door, I look at the bedroom window and if it's not a girl scout with cookies I don't answer ;) Mostly because then I have to deal with a dog and toddler going crazy but second I hate answering the door if DH isn't home.

I'm definitely suspicious! I've lived in big cities too long to be trusting of anyone. Luckily for me, we live in an apartment building with a video intercom, so it is extremely unlikely that someone would actually knock at our door, since they have to get through two security doors first! The only time it ever happens is the postman (actually happened yesterday), but he usually buzzes first, unless someone else has already let him in.

I'm hella suspicious of anyone knocking on my door, which is why we have a security door. If I don't know who it is I open the wooden door but never unlock the security door. I don't care if it seems rude not opening the door to the other person, I have a "do not knock" sign for salespeople (illegal to ring/knock if its displayed). No chance of anyone coming into my house for an "emergency", if something seemed really legit and they asked to use the phone I'd ask whats the number and call it myself or dial emergency services if needed. otherwise, bugger offf!!

I am now. My daughter's music teacher was shot in the middle of the day when she opened the door for someone around this time last year. It was very traumatizing and made me extra paranoid.

@Mrs. Sunshine: I live out in the country, I don't generally open the door or leave it unlocked because I am worried that people will break in. I am crazy paranoid about people I don't know approaching our house. In fact not to long ago two "sales" people stopped by our house to try and gain entry for their "show". I kindly declined and then alerted my family and the police.

@Mrs. Sunshine: Ours sound FEROCIOUS and about 100 lbs more than they are (biggest is probably 45 lb). But in reality if someone came in the bigger one would run and hide in fear and the smaller one would jump up for pets and then roll over for a belly rub...so I just have to hope their barking scares people off!

I'm pretty suspicious - but we also recently had a bike stolen off our back porch. Which is much less visible than our front porch. I open the door more than I should but I can usually see who it is from the living room window - though I wish I had a peep hole. I also generally have 2 loud barking dogs behind me which I would think would deter any hopeful thieves (also deters baby sleep, so people at the door annoy the crap out of me). I also wouldn't let anyone use my phone but I don't have a landline and wouldn't trust someone to use my iPhone. I would make a call for them if there was an emergency though.

@Mrs. Sunshine: I'm totally suspicious. It would never occur to me to shoot someone, but I hate opening the door for strangers. Funny story - we moved from NYC to the suburbs recently and like the second day we were there, someone knocked on our door. My husband and I were both like "WTF - who is that?" We answered the door, but I'm sure we looked ready to rumble. It was my new neighbors - with muffins. Needless to say, we're learning to dial the suspicion back a little

Im pretty freakin suspicious. Im not paranoid, but I pay attention and Im a cynic who generally assumes the worst of people.

Our neighborhood is decent, but not far from some areas that are much shadier. Im usually on my guard, although I run outside with headphones in and dont really worry about something happening.

Well, our neighbors across the street just had their house broken into last week, so I'm way more suspicious now! I had already been noticing an increase of foot traffic on our street from people I know don't live in our neighborhood.

I have a security system being installed tomorrow morning, in fact.

@Mrs. Oatmeal: @Synchronicity: we also live in a small town BUT we live on a beat up county road that narrows to just barely one car wide before it dead ends to 5 acres that is divided between us and 4 other members of DH'S family so it's strange for someone we don't know to be down here, walking, having been "dropped off". We have never had a salesperson come to our door. It's not common for someone I don't know to show up which is why I just opened the door without even seeing who it was but immediately regretted it.

I often won't answer the door if I don't know the person because I don't want to deal with a salesperson. I would never worry about someone casing the joint or anything, though... Not in this neighborhood. We also have a huge dog and she's definitely a deterrent, but I wouldn't worry regardless.

Wow! This is a little mindboggling to me, but then again, I live in little-city Canada. I'd answer the door most of the time (unless I were in my pyjamas), and if I had a home phone, I'd probably let someone borrow it.

We get people knocking on our door selling things, fundraising for things, sometimes kids looking to make extra pocket money raking or shovelling, etc. I answer the door, but in that situation I would likely have directed the person to the closest business, just because I don't want anyone touching my stuff! I haaaaate when solicitors go door to do around dinner time.

I also never lock my door when I am home (except at night!) and often leave it unlocked when I go pick my kids up from school. Friends laugh that they can just walk right in our house!

I am more trusting in the sense if someone knocks on my door I wouldn't ignore them. But, I don't open the door for everyone. I certainly would not let someone use my cell phone because I'm a germaphobe and realize it could be a distraction ploy. My husband will just ignore people he is not expecting. I took a self-defense class taught by police officers and they suggest calling out "who is it?!" to alert would-be robbers that the home is not an easy mark. We live on a cul-de-sac and I am always leary of the vans that just so happen to wander in our circle and slowly leave when I or a neighbor drive up.
