We started around 10 months, half heartedly, then forgot about it. Something clicked a few weeks ago (almost 17 months) and he started signing "more" completely on his own. It made us wish we had kept up with it more!

We started at 8 months or so, and X really picked them up a couple of months later. We just introduce a sign at a time, so when it seems like there's something that would be really handy for him to be able to say, we just look it up online and start using it regularly with him. At 19 months he picks them up really fast. At this point, he can sign "more", "please", "thank you", "all done", "eat", "milk", "water", "potty", "help"... there are more, but those are the ones coming to mind right now.

I didn't start until around 10 months, when my daughter started saying real words. We did nurse, drink, eat, all done and more. They were all fantastically useful, and I was really sorry when she dropped them eventually in favor of the words. Drink, especially, because she started asking for water way more than I was giving it to her, and I knew she wanted more.

I didn't make any big effort. I just found a book at a used book store about it. Then I'd start doing the sign when I said the word. She'd take a week or two, then she'd sometimes just make it for fun, then she'd clearly make it with intent and meaning another week or so later.

@PurpleUnicorn: It's something she can watch, but she's only watched it twice she doesn't have much interest in TV.

http://www.amazon.com/Baby-Einstein-My-First-Signs/dp/B000LSAIZI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371260613&sr=8-1&keywords=baby+einstein+baby+sign

I know there are a couple of apps with baby signs too, that are free. You could always just look up signs as you want them. I do have a book and flashcards and it said some good ones to start with are "more" "milk" "all done" and then a couple of signs that your baby would be interested in.

@Bao: thanks, i will look into the DVDs. are those something your baby watches or you watch to learn how to teach LO?

@matador84: thanks for the book recommendation. i just looked it up, it has great reviews. i also want to find a DVD to watch, but an introductory book sounds good too.

@BananaPancakes: sounds cute. i really want L to learn!

@katsupgirl: keep us posted on how it goes!

I was just thinking about this. My LO is 8 months and I'm going to try some signs now. Honestly, I made some up cause I've been lazy about researching. I have an intern at work that knows sign language so I'm going to ask her to teach me a couple of signs.

We only half try, but now at 14 months, he can pick up signs right away, so we use it more now than when we first started around 8 months. He really only cares about milk and eat, though. Oh, he does love "all done," too.

we started at 4 months, it's never too early or late. he is 9 months now and recognizes more/play/toys/eat. we are working on stringing signs together, like more blueberries or more banana? i am about to introduce him to bath/book/bed.

i read the baby sign bible while i was still pregnant and thought it was a great, helpful resource for how to introduce sign.

@PurpleUnicorn: it's not too late, actually we started around 8 months. It took her 5 days and she learned the sign for "more". We have the baby Einstein DVD for baby signs but don't really use it. I worked in a daycare before and we learned the signs there, so I'm doing them from memory. I've been slacking with the other signs though I really need to work on them.

I've been meaning to since before he was born. And now all of a sudden he turned 7 months and i've done nothing of the sort! Is it too late to start? Are you teaching your baby to sign? when and how did you start?

And can you recommend any books/DVDs to get started? I don't want to go to an actual class, I just want to teach him from home.
