@Charm54: yup, I leave it on my nightstand plugged in. But you don't have to. When there is sound or movement it sends a notification to your phone.

I want one where I don't have to rely on one of our phones or devices so that's the first thing I am looking for as I am trying to decide about our video baby monitor purchase.

@Charm54: for us it wasn't so much about having access outside the home. It was having the video feed right on our phone and not have to tote around a receiver. And we can view it on our computer and both our phones! With any other kind of Motorola/summer infant that's not possible. Even if you could have one camera accessed on more than one receiver I'm thinking you'll have to buy another receiver. You can also access more than one camera on the same device. And the range obviously is so much better! Price wise is comparable and cheaper than a lot of the baby wireless monitors. The pro is $199. Btw it's now called Nest Cam.

I have never thought about this in my life. Our "baby monitor" is a wifi security camera on a password protected wifi connection.

@regberadaisy: maybe that's what I need to do is just look into an extra secure model like the one you have.

For those of you who have one with wifi, do you find it helpful? Do ever access it from outside of the house? Trying to decide if I would even use that feature or not.

I wouldn't worry about it. I'm sure not all wifi monitors are created equal. We have a dropcam pro that uses "AES encryption, commonly referred to as “bank-level” security. This ensures that your live and stored video are safe, even on open wireless networks. Your video is encrypted on the camera before it is transmitted to the cloud and streamed securely to your devices using SSL encryption. Video is securely encrypted when uploading from the camera to our servers, and again when streaming from our servers to the customer's device when viewing live video or recorded footage."

From what I've read a hacker would need physical access to my monitor. Then spend time breaking it apart to access the SSL certificate. Then put it back in the nursery, without us noticing.

Yeah.

I think the baby monitor hacking thing is one of those overblown trend pieces. It's such a remote possibility that I wouldn't worry aboout it. Even if it did happen, it's super creepy, but it isn't dangerous. And I agree with pp, I would worry way more about pool safety or guns that I would about baby monitor hacking.

Real hackers can find out all your social media passwords, bank account and credit card numbers, addresses, etc in 30 minutes or less. They could probably even shut off your electric grid pretty easily. (This happens very rarely, obviously.) I would imagine the only "hackers" who are interested in screwing with people via baby monitor are some losers who find an unsecured network. If your wifi network is password protected, I wouldn't worry about it.

I wasn't, but maybe a little now?! DH somehow made our camera only accessible from our own network. I can't access it from outside home.

@Charm54: I think in a lot of those cases, the parents left the default password in place? Although it's definitely true that a lot of wifi security can be hacked, even with a good password!

We are in the market for a double video camera and the idea of getting one with wifi capabilities crossed my mind. But in the past week I've read several news reports about them getting hacked and the hackers watching/talking to the children and parents, following them around the room, playing eerie music  That freaks me out so much!! I think we will stick with a simple one now. Is that a legit concern or are there ways to prevent hackers?
