We have a car replacement pot of money that we contribute to each month (that is about the same about as a typical car loan payment) so when we need a new car, we can buy them with cash. I can't imagine having a car payment... We are thinking of leasing when we upgrade one in a year or 2. I'm leaning towards a mini van and don't want to be stuck with it if I don't like it. But the thought of the extra $ makes me wary. The one we bought is not paid off, though it should be within a year or so. But the other is a lease. My MiL works for Nissan so we get such insanely good discounts that leasing isn't nearly the waste it would be (since we get free maintenance, etc with it). We only have one car and we were fortunate to be able to pay cash for it. If we get a second car it will be new (to us) and we'll have to finance part of it, but the plan would be to not pay more than $7,000 and make extra payments on it. He just upgraded last year to a Jeep with four wheel drive. DH gets called into work during the worst weather so I needed him to have four wheel drive for my peace of mind!
