It needs to be professionally done. Mine were pierced around age 8, at the mall, and they were not done evenly. One is nicely centered while the other is close to the outside of the lobe. My best friend's daughter is just a few days younger then LO and I was so mad at him when they were about a year old and he kept talking about how cute friend's LO is with earrings and why didn't we get them for LO?!? He had totally forgotten how much he didn't want it done at first!!</p> <p>So LO is 2.5 now and constantly asks to wear earrings and is obsessed with mine (I have multiple piercings and wear fairly large earrings most days). We'll probably take her to get it done around age four if she keeps asking. We never had a protest. Of course, our LO was only a year old, so maybe that helped.</p> <p>I remember when I got my ears pierced, I was 8 and I was old enough to have developed this whole huge fear surrounding getting my ears pierced. So even though I wanted them (I had been begging my parents for ages), I was literally sick to my stomach from fear of the pain. And of course, the pain is nothing! It's like getting a shot. But I had mentally developed this big anxiety about it. That was one major benefit of doing it when DD was so young. No anxiety, no tears, no issues cleaning. She started to wince and then went straight into smiles as they put the mirror in front of her. :-) I highly recommend going to a place that pierces both ears at one time.<br /> She was terrified of cleaning though. You don't have to scrub or twist anymore. Just dab on the solution two or three times a day. My 5 yr old protested one day and we simply told her she either cleaned them or they come out and don't get put back in. It's a long standing tradition in my family to get them done on a girl's first birthday! </p> <p>This picture was taken about 45 minutes after they were done. We took her to a professional body piercing studio and had them needle pierced. She was only upset for a minute or 2. They healed REALLY well.
