I would say their experience will be different than mine. I grew up in a tiny town and didn't have a lot of cultural or even educational activities to occupy my free time. I went to school, and then came home and basically played by myself. I didn't have any neighbors my age within walking distance. My sons will grow up in a major city, and I plan to take advantage of all the city has to offer. We already have a membership to the children's museum, and we do things like Gymboree and music classes during the week. My son is constantly around other kids and is very social.

Completely different! I grew up in small town America in a very run of the mill, middle class area. We traveled a bit, but only once per year. There were no cultural influences or exposure to other languages.

My kids are growing up trilingual in a European capital. We are fortunate to be able to travel fairly regularly and my kids have friends from all over the world since we live in an expat community.

Charlie and Olive's is definitely different from mine. I was born in Korea and Korean was my first language. I was raised by immigrant parents and we spoke Korean at home and ate Korean food. I also grew up in Koreatown in Los Angeles and went to a Korean church, so my life was about as Korean as it could get living in the states.

Charlie and Olive eat a fair amount of Korean food, but don't speak the language (though they do go to Korean school). They're growing up in Brooklyn and have a very diverse circle of friends. We also don't have a car so the lifestyle we have here is very different from the car culture life I lived in LA. And of course I'm much more American than my parents.

Of course parenting is very different nowadays (my parents never read a single book to me growing up and we played unsupervised from 3+). But that's probably similar for many.

Are your kids having a different or similar upbringing to your own?
