Our daycare/preschool is not. We haven't encountered any notice about any food restrictions in either of my LOs classes so I'm not sure how it's handled.

@erinbaderin: Just FYI, if the allergy is severe enough, the teacher could have a serious reaction just from touching a surface that a kid who had eaten eggs had touched, or be sensitive to it in the air if they eat in the classroom, so that may be the scenario. I have an allergy to nuts that is absolutely that severe and work in an environment with adolescents and I'm still extremely careful what I touch!

Private preschool - School serves nut free snacks, for parties/events we can do homemade, they just ask that we use nut free items and bring the box so the the kids parents can view the label and decide. I always sent nut free lunches when my kids stayed for lunch, but not sure what the actual "rule" was.

Public elementary school (PK3 & K) - daily snacks we sent in had to be nut free and were limited to fruits, vegetables, and cheese or yogurt (no crackers). Kids didn't stay for lunch; lunch at the enrichment program DD1 attended was supposed to be nut free. For parties, all food had to be prepackaged (commercially) in individual packs and nut free. In first grade, snack rules stay the same snack/party rules apply, but lunches can include nuts. There is an allergy table where non-allergy kids can join their friends, but have to have their lunches checked first.

Summer camp - for kindergartners up to 5th graders - no rules at all.

The daycare/preschool I just signed my kids up for is but free. They also don’t allow any outside food brought in and provide all meals and snacks, except for babies under one. You have to bring in sealed store bought baby food for infants. I believe for celebrations you can bring in store bought treats, but they give you a list of approved items to choose from.

Our daycare is nut free. They allow us to bake our own birthday treats. They have never asked us not to bring in other foods, but I usually ask if there are other allergies in the classroom so that I can be cautious. For example, there is a child with an egg allergy so I don't usually put eggs in LOs lunchbox just in case since they are only 1-2 year olds who aren't aware enough of their allergies.

Our preschool policy says to “be mindful of nuts.” I think that is too ambiguous and never really understood if they were banned. I have no idea how the other parents interpret the policy.

We can bring homemade food for treats or potlucks but those are explicitly stated as nut free. Kids have other allergies (they are posted on the wall) but we are not asked to make accommodations for those.

Preschool was nut free and then based on class they let us know what else was off limits. We had a small class with no allergies so we got really lucky.

This year will be at a public NYC school and they say on their website they cannot be nut/allergy-free but they are considered “allergy aware”.

I am always so torn on the nut free thing because I KNOW how serious it can be and I feel for those kids and parents. But the majority of kids are ok with it so it’s also kinda hard to justify that no one should be allowed. I can never decide what I agree with!

Our preschool was nut free and no baked goods allowed (but that might have been more for kosher reasons)
I don’t have any kids with allergies (knock on wood, one is still a baby) but I really just don’t take things with peanuts or tree nuts to shared space kids events or classes. My nephews have life threatening nut allergies and they are little guys. It’s no joke and no real extra work for me to keep nuts for Home consumption only; I just don’t send nut based stuff to school, camp, classes, parties, play dates, etc.

Preschool is nut free but definitely not enforced as strictly as mentioned above.
Our elementary is not - they do have an allergen table at lunch I believe and teachers with an allergic student may handle it differently (we didn’t have that this past year). I guess they figure kids are old enough to get it more, but I’ve also heard the district doesn’t want to do it for $ reasons around what they can sell for food. Not sure how true that is.
I did find it kind of shocking when we just did a short camp at a nearby preschool (not our usual one) and there were no restrictions on lunch, and only on snack if someone had an allergy.

My niece has a peanut allergy (though luckily has completed OIT now) and I find it pretty scary!

We've never had real restrictions in daycare, preschool or elementary (in 2 different countries). The only "restriction" we ever had was at daycare. Parents could bring birthday treats, but they had to be store-bought so they could trace back any problems. In elementary, treats can be homemade. That said, we've always been at schools where food is provided, other than birthday/party treats.

My son’s PreK was, but there was also a kid with a peanut allergy in his classroom. His K classroom will only nut-free if a kid in the section has an allergy. I kind of think they should just make it nut-free to cover their bases and to keep kids safe.

My nephew (6) has major food allergies (dairy, egg, and tree-nuts). His mom was able to advocate for a one to one (TA) to be present with him throughout his day. I’m a teacher and it’s been written in IEPs for me to wipe down kids’ desks before I teach them. Food allergies are no joke and I take them seriously.

At a friend’s daughter’s school, they basically just had separate areas where anyone with an allergy could sit and everyone else sat somewhere else. That just seemed kind of weird and like extra work and riskier than necessary, but I also only hear second hand.

@erinbaderin: yeah that’s how our old school was- the one class had a kid with lots of allergies so they were more restricted, but my daughter’s specific class had no allergies at all but was still strictly but free.

B starts in September and I think how it works is that the whole school is nut free but once we know his class we’ll get a more specific list of things we can’t send - for example I know one class had no eggs and no bananas last year. The no eggs one would have really annoyed me because as I understand it, it was the teacher who was allergic and presumably she knows better than to eat my son’s lunch...

Like it says- are your schools nut free? What about other allergens?

At my daughter’s preschool it was a nut free school. Parents brought it snacks that had to be safe and still in the packaging, so no cross contamination, and for parties and such you couldn’t bring home made goods. Even fruit was only supposed to be cut there with their knives and cutting boards. For lunches you obviously could prepare your own but had to write “no nuts” on anything that wasn’t in its original packaging so they knew you had checked (like veggie straws were fine in a baggy but the Trader Joe’s brand that was made in a facility that processes nuts were not). I know when they have other allergies in a specific class they more severely limit what the parents can bring as a class snack.

Her new school has no limitations and it’s so strange to me. She went to camp there and I felt so weird sending her with real peanut butter, but they said since it’s a shared space (in a church where other groups use it too) they can’t really control it. There are no food allergies in her class this year so I guess I’ll just send regular peanut butter...

I am lucky we have no food allergies but I try to be as sensitive as I can to those that do.
