Such awesome stories on here... my family came to the US many generations ago, but my FIL came to Seattle from Belgium in the mid-1960's to work for Boeing. On one of his trips back to Belgium, he proposed to my husband's mom (who was also Belgian -- a Belgian beauty queen, in fact!), and she came back with him to the US in 1969. My husband was born in Seattle, and then they all went back to Belgium in the mid-1970's when my FIL was laid off from Boeing during those tough times... but then he was rehired by Boeing a year later, became a US citizen and continues to work at Boeing to this day. DH's mom passed away many years ago, though she never did become a citizen. She was a monarchist to the end!

My parents fled Vietnam after the fall of Saigon. They ended up in a refugee camp in Guam (I think?), then were sponsored by an American in the CIA my dad worked with to the suburbs outside of DC.

My parents divorced when I was 3 and my mom moved to SoCal to be near Little Saigon. My dad still lives in Northern VA.

My parents aren't immigrants, but my grandma came to Canada from Portugal in the 1940's. She ended up in Calgary, Alberta.
I am an American though, because she ended up having my dad in California and when he got married, he and and my mom moved to the states.

Similar to Andrea's mom, but after the Philippines like around 1975, my dad went to the east coast. I believe he was sponsored by a couple in my hometown. Eight years later, my mom followed my dad. My dad had gotten a job and a house and he sponsored my mom and my sister over here.

@Andrea: Oh, man. That would have been so cool to end up in Hawaii!

My parents had a quickie wedding in Korea and came over on my dad's student visa. My mom had just finished nursing school and was about to leave for Germany for a nursing job with many of her classmates. One of her friends cancelled her plans for Germany because her boyfriend married her and was able to take her to America on his student visa. My dad was about to leave for America with a student visa as well, so he said "let's do that!" My mom was shocked because they weren't even DATING at the time. Literally. My mom was taking care of his mom's injured arm. HER mom convinced her to do it because she liked my dad so much. So they got married really fast and came over here in the mid 70s. They've only been back twice in almost 40 years.

A few of my dad's family was already here, and bit by bit my mom's family all came over.

Both my parents immigrated to California (Bay Area) from the Philippines separately in the late 70's. My grandfather was sponsored to come here as a minister and came here first. They sponsored him specifically to start a church in this area, so that's how he ended up here. A few years later he sponsored his family (my grandma, mom and her siblings) to come over.

My dad was sponsored by his elderly aunt. I don't remember why it was just him, but he's the only one of his family who came.

My parents met and married here.

My mom and dad immigrated to the US from the Philippines in the late 60's. They went to Los Angeles and settled down there. I think my dad liked the weather and he had a few friends there already too. Extended family followed suit and to this day, pretty much my entire family is still there.

My mom fled Vietnam because of the war. She went to an internment camp (I think?) in the Philippines. From there she went to LA and then Hawaii. She was there alone and then somehow got the rest of the family to join her a few years later.

My dad's eldest sister (my keun gomo!) came here in the 70s after my cousin's father moved back home following his station in Korea. He passed a couple years later, but my aunt stayed because she wanted it to be easier for my cousin (half black/half korean) to grow up in the states/detroit rather than in korea like an outcast...

She sponsored her brothers/sister to come here (with the exception of 1 aunt who stayed in Korea)... and it was in 1990 that we all came to Michigan (so my mom and my brother and I were all part of my dad's sponsorship).

Where did they initially immigrate to? Do you know how they picked that particular place?

My dad immigrated to Toronto from Korea in 1975. His older brother (my uncle) left Korea, lived in Denmark before being "allowed" into Canada. Once he settled in Toronto, he sponsored my dad.
