Yes, both of our cats are! My boy cat is sooo timid that when he sees our doors open at home he runs and hides, but our girl cat is an escape artist and tries to run whenever she can! We haven't had any problems with either of them getting outside and we hope to keep it that way. But you never know! Better safe than sorry!

We talked about getting our dog chipped, but she's an inside dog and the only times she goes out, she's on a leash with one of us, so I'm not sure it something that we need to do.

@Foodnerd81: Glad to help! Usually you can register on their website and update information fairly easily. If you have trouble, they are very helpful via phone setting you up.

If you don't have the chip number, most vets will have a tech or assistant scan them and give you the number for free- of course call and check first ;) It is literally a 30 second process.

One of the most heartbreaking things is when you find a chip, but the owners never updated their contact information. So sad when it is an easy process to maintain, most people just don't think about it. I have seen chips work across the country, it is so cheap considering it is a lifelong permanent identification.

@lemondrop: Thank you for this-- my dog is microchipped, but I never updated the address info when I moved and forgot who or where I was supposed to contact. It's homeagain, I think, so I'll look that up.

And yes, my dog is microchipped. My ex-SIL worked at a vet so we got it done for cheap. He really isn't a runner, but it's nice to have it just in case. I didn't know they would send faxes out-- that's nice peace of mind.

My dog isn't and I feel like we should because if he gets out, that's it! He's on a full on dead sprint to heck who knows where. He ran out under a hole in our fence one night and we were so scared that he was gone forever. He's a jack russell so he can RUN!

@Meggo5: if you find out what company the chip is from (Avid, Homeagain, etc), contact them to keep your address and phone numbers updated.

If they ever get lost, call their hotline to report them missing. They usually send out faxes to all vet clinics in the area reporting them as being lost. They will also get you in touch with who found them if the pet is located so they can be returned to you.

Whew, glad all is well!

Absolutely! All of our pets (including our 3 indoor-only cats). My husband and I both work in the veterinary fields and have seen so many success stories of pets being returned to their owners because of a chip. No way would I have a cat or dog without a chip!

Our cat isn't. He is an indoor cat that has only gone outside once when my old housekeeper left the door open while she was vacuuming, he hated her and is afraid of the vacuum. Where we live now, he'd have to get through 2 doors and go down 4 flights of stairs and then out the door to the building, so I'm not really worried:)

Yes. I had to b/c she grew up in a big city. It's very inexpensive and you can just go to your local SPCA to do it if your vet charges too much. Just remember to update your address every time you move. :)

yep, dogs and cats are all microchipped (with the exception of maybe my oldest cat). I don't use collars unless we're out on a walk, so it's pretty much their only identification (bad, I know, but I fear strangulation and I don't like the way it mats the fur).

There's a dog one neighborhood over who's always getting out, and the only ID they have on him is the rabies tag with their vet's info. I've gotten stuck with the dog after hours, and it's somewhat annoying to walk a lunging lab around until their owners spot him.
