I grew up in a very red area. The turning point was in 9th grade civics class when the teacher wrote out characteristics of republicans and democrats on the chalk board and then asked us to raise our hands to say which party we identified with. My parents were both very serious second wave feminists - my father a professor of feminist philosophy, and my mother a lesbian separatist. My father remained firmly fossilized in his second wave viewpoint until the day he died, and I'd have loved to have had a chance to raise his consciousness in recent years. My mother is beyond hope. </p> <p>After being beaten over the head with my father's feminism and my mother's man hating I really went a different way. They're not even religious; they're just very fiscally conservative and somewhat classist and like to be blowhards about it. In my teens and 20s I bought into all of my dad's political grandstanding at the dinner table, but now that I have more perspective I find it obnoxious and hate discussing politics with my parents.</p> <p>I generally vote for Democratic presidential candidates. I would be open to voting for a sane Republican but those guys cannot seem to procure a decent candidate. I wanted to vote for McCain in 08 but as a woman I was really insulted by Sarah Palin's nomination.</p> <p>I used to be somewhat libertarian in my views, but now that just seems selfish. My mom is apolitical and doesn't vote, but she generally agrees with the idea of wealth redistribution. My father is a Republican (he's rooting for Jeb Bush in the primary). I've been a Libertarian since the age of 14 or so. Even if you're sure of your own beliefs! I think it is a life-long learning process. And for me, it's really come down to prioritizing my beliefs and what I think are the most important issues to vote for. We differ slightly on some issues but only because we disagree on the best way to accomplish the same goals. My brother had a brief stint as a republican, mostly to piss them off I think, and now has settled into libertarianism it seems. So he has the same social ideals in terms of marriage/abortion but he feels less of an obligation to the health of society as a whole. My political views have thus changed basically how you'd expect, with the exception of how I feel about gay marriage. I never really got the opposition to homosexuality, so I've always been pro-gay rights. Not sure how I managed to avoid that one; I definitely was 100% conservative in everything else. Now I believe I'm best classified as a democratic socialist. According to one online quiz, I agree with Bernie Sanders on 99% of issues. This from someone who voted for Bush. ETA- My family is still fundamentalist.
