No loans for him. My parents paid for my state univ. undergrad but not my fashion school tuition. I still have 2 loans that I've been paying off forever for those! When I started paying about a decade ago, I think I owed about $130k, mostly from law school. Now it's down to a little over $40k, with two loans of about equal size. One is on a shorter plan, and I should be done with it in under 4 years just paying the minimum. Since I'd love to get rid of the $600/month payment even sooner, I try to throw some extra at that loan at bonus/tax refund time. The other loan, I think paying the minimum it'll be 13 years or something? But it's "only" about $225/month, and I'll start paying extra once I get the other loan paid off.</p> <p>Ugh. We got free undergraduate and masters but hubs' law degree was a cool 90 THOUSAND DOLLARS. Luckily we qualify for IBR with loan forgiveness after 20 years. Our currentl monthly amount is around 280; would be lower if we had more kids....! But they're still taking payments at present because, over here in the UK, student loans repayments are collected via HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs). They only send one payment a year to the Student Loans Company, in April. They wont stop taking the repayments until the Student Loans Company tell them the account is clear - and the account wont be clear until they've sent this financial year's payment!!!!
