I found the video monitor indispensable once we started sleep training. I don't know if we could have done CIO without being able to see that she was OK on the monitor.

@Cherrybee: Yes, I didn't want to go around being a naysayer all day that day, so I avoided the thread. You can feel better about that one!

Also, I got a boppy and hated it. I found a regular bed pillow much more useful (no hole!) Plus I've had a few instances of seeing suffocations due to boppies. That was enough to make me get rid of mine!

@Mrs. Jacks: Really?? Oh!! I'm glad because I'm not going to win that one!! I value your opinion on these things - cot bumper has come off the list since a comment you made the other day.

@lawbee11: Hahahahaha!!!!! I laughed out loud when I read that!! I can imagine my hubby saying that - "Why can't you just put them in a carrier bag?" Giggle!!

Tonight's debacle was about strollers and, specifically, do we even need one??? Erm YES!!! He was all about strollers the other day!! now he thinks we could do without!! But as @Amelieisme: said, a practical DH is both a blessing and a curse. Once I convinced him we DO need a stroller, he spent the entire evening researching them, gave me a ton of reasons the one I had chosen was not suitable (for example it was 27kg!! I hadn't even considered the weight!!) and we may just have agreed on one that is affordable and meets all our requirements.

He's a good'en - except when he doesn't let me have my way! Haha!

@Cherrybee: You are so cute! Baby stuff is really compelling.

But really, if I might interject, I'd definitely stay away from movement monitors. They have never been demonstrated to prevent anything, despite what their marketing will have you believe.

A practical DH is a blessing AND a curse! Mine is the same. He made a comment about how I complain we have too many clothes for LO (we do! BUT they were all bought as gifts or were hand-me-downs) and I bought an outfit for him the other day. Mind you, it was 40% off and it was adorable and it is an all-in-one playsuit which is my favorite thing to put LO in. AND its the only piece of clothing I have bought for LO since he was BORN and he is 6 months old....

There was so much crap that I just didn't need or use and it took over my house. Then I discovered buying gently used and now I have hundreds in store credit and nothing to buy

@Cherrybee: The nosefrida is essential! I saw a post a week or so ago about mold growing in bulb syringes so I went home and cut open all 3 of ours. There was mold!! And I clean the heck out of those bulb syringes too! By the way, I have a super frugal and practical husband and he's always fighting me on baby gear. But I buy it anyway and try to find a way to convince him!

@Cherrybee: I feel like a nice, smooth-riding stroller is a MUST in the UK. Crap roads, cobbles, etc. We had a cheapie one at first and went out and got a nicer, more expensive one later because it became a must! I think the NoseFrida is a must also. That thing has paid for itself.

@Cherrybee: Yeah, I don't know how I lucked out on the fact that most of DH's co-workers are all parents with small kids already. Actually, they do a lot of convincing him of stuff for me! lol! The NoseFrida one was funny because it was actually at the baby shower his co-workers threw for us. One of the dad's was talking about the RSV and his kids needing medicine. So I randomly tossed out, have you ever used the NoseFrida and what do you think? Then HE went on to say how awesome it was, better than the battery-operated one, and how the bulb was gross, etc. lol! And the women in his office are pretty awesome, always telling him what he needs to do as a dad. But if you can get in front of a dad your DH values his opinion, maybe some subtle way of bringing up a video monitor would help. I think out of everything, that one is for sure a must!

@shopaholic: You know what, point number 2 - that's a really good bit of advice right there!!! The stroller (with the special suspension) he loves so much - that was another dad's recommendation!

Hmm... I need some dads for him to chat to. He wouldn't take any notice of my BFF's hubby because he thinks he spends too freely (which he does) and gets seduced by marketing tactics! Hmm.....!

I'm like @tororojo: in this way. I researched and researched all sorts of baby items and would keep a list on Excel to update and edit way before I even created my registry. It was super helpful because when I would see a really crazy good deal and I already knew it was something I wanted, I'd just get it. (i.e. Snugabunny swing for $40, Boppy Pillow w/cover $30, TT bottles 2 for $8, NoseFrida for $5, etc.) In that way, I saved a lot and could use baby shower gifts towards other things!

My DH doesn't object too much like yours it seems, but what HAS helped were 2 things:

1) I took him to a baby store where he got to see the real retail prices of things I was finding deals on. This allowed him to understand how much I was saving! Seeing other parents-to-be getting the same things and paying so much more was helpful too. And the Sales Associate that was there to help explain and show us functions and products, etc. and comparisons. We only did this once since DH is busy and I do most of the stuff online. One trip was enough for him to just be like "okay - I trust you honey! You do your thing!"

2) OTHER Dads (and Moms) that are his friends or co-workers. He actually was the one who came home to me after he learned about his friend's video monitor! He saw first-hand the convenience and need for it and told me we NEED one with night-vision and talk-back options. And wanted a phone app option after he talked to a few more co-workers about it. Their opinions of what were "life-savers" are worth their weight in gold! Even the NoseFrida, which I would have never mentioned to DH about, but his co-worker's kid had RSV and told him how it worked SO much better than the regular bulb. Those kinds of dad-to-dad tips have made a lot of impact on DH as he soaks up new-dad advice!

We had this problem, but the opposite way! I insisted that we didn't need a video monitor, that an audio monitor would suffice (I wasn't so bad that I didn't think we needed ANY monitor though). My DH really wanted the video monitor and I kept saying no.

That was until LO was born and he needed to be resuscitated. Then I was in his room constantly making sure he was breathing. And I wanted to know he was breathing at any point during the night, so I caved and we got a video monitor.

I think it's good to make your list early and shop for deals over time, that way you don't have to drop a huge wad of cash right before the baby is born. Plus I'm sure you'll get some of the stuff as gifts! My DH also thinks the NoseFrida is stupid/unnecessary, but I think bulb aspirators are gross and got the NF as a gift--win! We didn't get a video monitor, but I know lots of people love them. You just have to pick and choose and compromise and I'm sure y'all will figure it out!

@Thehistoryofus: Ahh, now strollers is one thing he does want to splurge on. He has heard about this stroller with a super off-road suspension and he really wants it!! Boys toys, see! I've picked a nice, mid-range, affordable one out - I'm hoping he will push them round the store with me and agree that we don't need one designed by NASA!!

@Foodnerd81: Aaw, hugs for you. We always go through these things at the same time, don't we? I have no doubt that my DH will change his tune when we get nearer the time but right now he clearly doesn't want to play! Whereas I want to go shopping and touch things and push strollers around!

Keep in mind that you can do the selling after the baby outgrows whatever. I made some of my money back on some baby stuff at a consignment sale. So if you can buy it used and then sell it when you are done with it, the overall cost isn't too bad!

And you DO need a video monitor :) I love love love love love ours.

I'm American, so like @sea_bass: says, I actually do expect to be gifted a lot of items at my shower. But I've bought a lot of baby shower gifts, so... it's only fair :)

My issue is DH doesn't even want to think about what we need, and since we don't know where we will be living, we don't know a lot of things that we will need or want because of that too. I wanted to just look at cribs and nursery furniture this weekend and it turned into a huge... disagreement would be a nice way to put it (hormonal tired mess of a pregnant woman crying that she was tired of doing everything on her own and not being able to plan because we have no place to live is another way to put it). Clearly, I won the argument and we did look at cribs, but to him, what's the point of looking when we can't make a decision yet. Meanwhile, i've been researching things since long before we were even TTC. Luckily, if I tell him we NEED something, he doesn't usually question it too much, since he knows I've researched things way more than him.

@Cherrybee: Also, try to convince him to go look at gear in person. My husband total dismissed the idea that we needed a $400 stroller until we went to BRU and test drove the cheap $200 strollers and he agreed the extra features were worth the extra money. Guys need to see the stuff in person!!

@sea_bass: Right, missy! Off my thread! I will not have you being the voice of reason here!! (I'm sure you get that I am joking but just in case - I'm joking). I'm so excited!!! I want to shop because I've run out of things to read about babies!!! There's nothing left to do now but plan an elaborate system of milk storage in my freezer - and that requires STUFF!! Giggle!! You're right. I know you're right. He's probably right (he usually is). I still want cute mittens though (hides face in shame!)!!

@Thehistoryofus: I might ask him that tonight!! That will be interesting! I suspect he hasn't thought about it yet - and why would he, it's still almost 6 months away.

The sleep sheep is non-negotiable! lol!

MY DH understood the only way I was ready for DD to be out of our room was a video monitor, so that one wasn't a fight. We got very lucky that most of our big items were gifted to us from family members, so the little things were a little easier for him to handle. He did think our final Target trip before the baby was outrageous, but he got over it :)

I agree, take grandma she will do the "ooohs & ahhhs" a soon to be mom wants to hear when shopping!

We didn't have a lot of baby stuff. I got a sling, some bottles in case BFing didn't go well, a place for LO to sleep, and clothes/diapers. The stroller and car seat were our big purchases.

I suggest waiting and seeing what you actually use. I decided I did want a nursing pillow after LO was born, but other than that, we didn't buy much baby stuff with really limited lifespans. Part of that was economic considerations, part was a space issue.

LO is a toddler now, and it is hard not to buy books and (expensive wooden) toys at this stage, because he loves them and they'll get years of use! But I really think less is more where children are concerned.
