Our nearest family is 5 hours away, so we asked our best friends to watch DD until my parents could make the drive up here. However, since we knew they might not be available, our back up plan would have been to have DH stay with DD until my parents got up here; I would have just had to give birth by myself, since our hospital doesn't allow kids under 16 in the room during labor/delivery.

I hired a doula in case DH has to stay home with DD. Hopefully the doula can help shield DD from seeing me in pain, too!

We didn't have family nearby either... Well, they were about an hour and a half away. It was my cousin. She was on-call if I went into labor, but in her 8th month of pregnancy too!

So we asked DD's preschool teachers who were more local to be on-call for us too.

It totally stressed me out... But it all worked out. Oh, we also had a doula for #2 so that in case DH had to be with DD, at least I wasn't alone at the hospital.

Thank goodness DD didn't have to see me having contractions... I said bye to her in between contractions since she was just coming home from school, child care came over, and I went to the hospital right away. I delivered #2 super fast... Within 15 mins of seeing a doctor in the hospital, so if DD had come along, I think she would've seen way too much.

Good luck! Hope you figure out a plan!

I don't know how old your LO was but my hospital restricts I think it under... 2 years old - they can't come into the maternity ward! Something about security? I'm not sure, since we don't have any tiny people visiting and its our first baby I didn't ask further. But something to check out maybe?

If you could find a local babysitter and meet her/him once or twice ahead of time, and see if they'd be willing to be "on call"? I know I came a month early and took my mom by surprise - my dad wasn't even in town :/ she dropped my 2 older siblings off with a neighbor.

We move frequently & are far from family and friends so I feel for you! And if you're due in November, join us on the November thread :)http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/hey-nov-2012-mamas

@Mrs. Bee: that is very comforting to know it all worked out but how stressful! was Charlie in the room with you the whole time? Or did Mr.Bee have to miss the birth? In the event we need to bring LO with us (until we get someone), I wonder how to distract her from seeing me in pain, etc.

We took Charlie to the hospital with us since Olive came so unexpectedly. Then our babysitter came to the hospital and picked charlie up and spent the night with him at our apt. Mr. Bee went home in the morning to relieve the babysitter (thank goodness I gave birth before then) and meet my mom. My mom hopped on a redeye as soon as I got to the hospital, and she took over watching Charlie.

It's tough if you don't have family nearby who can do it! We didn't have a plan in place either, but it worked out.

How did you handle child care arrangements for LO while you were in the hospital with #2? I am 3 weeks till delivery and have no plan in place and fear that we may have to bring LO to the hospital with us! We are new to our area, so we aren't particularly close with anyone yet to ask and both our families live far away, along with our very close friends.
