I can't wait for my son to be 6 months old so I can introduce him to fun arts.

I used to coordinate an infant to twos program. Our philosophy was to exposed and introduce our infants to texture. One of the fun things we did with the infants were to put them in a small size swimming pool with cooked pasta (spaghetti, rigatoni, etc...) with olive oil. This allowed them to explore texturally using their hands, legs, and body (even mouth). This was a great activity, just make sure you have close supervision.

Also, using the swimming pool, we put whip cream (dairy free) with small hand size balls and plastic soft animals for them to explore. You can also add a small amount of food coloring and turn it into artwork (hand print/food print, etc...).

If you are worried about getting the floor dirty, invest in a small swimming pool, it is a great play equipment for your child with endless things that you can put in it for play exploration.

Using small dixie bowls, we would freeze small toys in it. Take the frozen bowl out of the dixie bowl and let the infants touch it. This introduce them to the concept of temperature. The toys inside the bowl kept them interested in it. The great thing about this was that it would melt and the infants were able to hold the toys afterwards. Again, you would do this with close supervision.

Another fun activity is if your child is starting solid, you can put the puree in the swimming pool and let your child explore freely. Easy clean up and it makes for good fun for your child while eating at the same time.

I'm sure there are some books out there on what to do for fun with your 6 months old. I wouldn't be surprised if there are activities that you can search online, too!

:)

One thing we do is with the kids is pudding painting. DS likes to put everything in his mouth, so using pudding on butcher paper is a little safer than regular paint for him.

We also do homemade playdough (again no big deal if he eats some of it), foam stickers and stamps with plant- based ink on construction paper to make greeting cards, and bathtub painting (paint is made out of soap and food coloring).

LO (10 months) does art every Friday at daycare, and usually it's pretty similar to what @littlek mentioned. A couple different things were:

- finger painted a circle, that was then cut in a spiral to make a mobile
- put pieces of sticky tape inside out on some construction paper. the babies stuck tissue paper to it.
- glued a sponge to a golfball and used it as a stamp
- froze some colored water in cups and let LOs feel the ice & paint with it (...or taste it, as my LO preferred)

@Bao: They do a lot of handprint artwork. Ex: Tree where the leaves are their handprint in green. They will also just give them a piece of paper and put paint on their hands and play classical music while they "paint." They will also give them crayons and let them go crazy with that. They will also take a predetermined shape (ex: car, airplane) and then put like blue pain on their fingers and let them fingerpaint that. He does at least 1 art project a week.

I think you can! Something we did that was easy was footprint art. We got a stamp pad (washable) and construction paper and made little stamps of his foot on paper. I know DS does art at school, I'm not brave enough to do that at home with our white carpet.

I want to start doing some art activities with LO but she is only 6 months old. Is there anything I can do with her at this point? I worked in a daycare and they were always doing art activities in the nursery but I can't remember for the life of me what they were, since it wasn't my classroom. I have a whole bunch of ideas for toddlers...but not babies. Maybe pudding play?
