Things were broken up into three similar jobs (like someone set/cleared the table, someone washed the dishes, someone dried and put them away. Someone collected all the trash, someone sorted the recycling, someone fed the pets. Etc.). That way no one could complain their chores were worse than the others because we all ended up doing them all. </p> <p>Also, we received an allowance, but it was made clear that was NOT payment for doing chores. We did chore because everyone in a family is expected to contribute. We got an allowance because our parents wanted us to have *some* money to get used to the value of money and what to do with it. It was "girls work" in my house. Always has been. And we were both supposed to do dishes every day after dinner, but he'd run to the bathroom for an hour, and my mom would beg me to "just finish them, for me", so I would do them all because I wasn't allowed to leave any....and then, without fail, he'd magically reappear after I did them all. I was also way more likely to just do things before being asked. Although we didn't really have a ton of chores. We used to have to do the dishes, but we'd just switch who did them every day. And we both had to help with setting and clearing the table. My father (who stayed at home) would make chore lists for everyone on the whiteboard in our kitchen. Chore lists got longer the older you were. I didn't have brothers, but I always felt I was kinda "treated" like a brother. I did all the outside chores which were intense (all horse care, dog and cat care, majority of lawn care, painting and mending fence, garbage to the dump, and the worst... raking 10 acres with swamp willows), on top of the inside chores. My grandfather grew up on a farm and did all the work while his sisters were... not doing any work. My parents treated us very differently, but I looked at us as me being the oldest more agreeable/ helpful child.</p> <p>My dad always tapped me to do yard work with him. The way I was able to spend time with my mom on the weekend was helping her with laundry or bill payment. I also liked setting the dinner table. My parents would always say how I was such a good packer and that made me want to show off of my skills during/ after a Sam's Club run. I don't recall other chores, but my bro definitely got off extra light when it came to helping around the house.</p> <p>Neither of us got paid for doing anything around the house. If we needed money for something we asked for it. I will say though my bro got his first cell phone at 16 and was supposed to cut the lawn in exchange.
