@shopaholic: eeee. I'll ask my mom to basically outline the recipe. Of course she's never written it down! She's made the seaweed soup basically her entire life multiple times a month. It's the traditional Korean birthday meal! And actually one of the only soups I will eat willingly on a regular basis. It's supposed to be amazing for milk production!

@mrs. wagon: Oh if you can get recipes for Korean soups for the one-month, please let me know! I think the Korean soups all sound much more tasty than the Chinese ones! I love seaweed already! And drinks with ice - oy vey, I get looks from the aunties about that ALL the time (even when I wasn't pregnant!)

@regberadaisy: @shopaholic: oh yes, I showered almost every day... cannot deal with the no showering! My grandma almost had a heart attack when she saw me drinking water with ice in it. She practically knocked it out of my hand. Wagon Sr. snuck me cold drinks because I cannot stand drinking anything that's not ice cold.

This makes me so thankful for my mom. My MIL brought like six pounds of soup bones from Flushing and my mom had THREE huge pots of three different soups boiling on the stove at all times after I had Wagon Jr. Miyuk Gook, Moo Gook, and Conamuhl Gook for those of you familiar with Korean! I am NOT a big soup fan so she'd make me other things and serve me a bowl of soup with every single meal. I was so thankful because I had a really rough recovery. Wagon Sr. and I just took care of the baby and barely ever left our bed.

@me0wmeeh: YES!!! My GF called me back to tell me about the cooking/delivery service for just the food & soups - $2K for the month! WTF?!

@Mrs. High Heels: Yeah, I just learned about those places, no thank you! My mom told me to just hire a regular nanny or maid like she had for my siblings, much cheaper. And offered my Grandma and MIL to do all the cooking.

@regberadaisy: Ugh! THAT'S where I draw the line with traditional stuff. Showers are mandatory!

Wow. I'm Chinese and never realized this was such a thing. I know my friend who has a very traditional MIL had to stay home for one month, but I thought the rule was just that they couldn't leave the house. I had no idea there was so much more going on with it. I'll have to ask my mom about what she thinks of this when I get pregnant..

Thank god for my mom! She stayed with me for 2.5 months. She was hard core :( Long sleeves, long pants, hot soups in 70 degree weather. Don't even get me started on the "hygiene" portion....

@shopaholic: We have sooo much in common - you just perfectly described MY MOM!! She is SUCH a career woman, and wanted me to go to some facility where they take care of new moms, but I said no thanks since what about my husband??

My mom did manage to make me a lot of healthy postpartum soups though, and I was lucky that my MIL stayed with us and cooked every day and helped with the baby shortly after labor and delivery.

This service is in the Bay Area, but it looks fantastic! http://www.liu-mama.com/?page_id=47&lang=en - it's not a live-in nanny, but they provide all the food for you...

My MIL (traditional Taiwanese) really wanted us to get one, but we're really private people and did not want a stranger coming to our home. So, she brought up an alternative plan of having confinement food delivered to me for a month. It was 2k just for food. I decided against it because I'm not a soup drinker (all of my Chinese relatives are rolling over now) nor can I stand herbal medicine. I grew up in a very Americanized Chinese family that was non traditional, so I wasn't going to pay 2k for food I may or may not eat. Barf.

My mom's big on the korean seaweed beef soup (which I think is tasty anyways) and I plan on making a giant pot of it and freezing it into portions. Supposedly the seaweed/iron is good for milk production. But, really, it's an easy and filling meal, so sign me up!

My mom is only half korean, but since her mom is full korean and lived with her for 2 weeks after we were born, she has some superstitions up her sleeve. She thinks I should only leave the house for the first month for dr's appts...but uh, no way :)

I would make as many of the soups in advance and freeze them! Soup always tastes better once it's reheated, anyways!

Luckily I had both my parents and occasionally the MIL help out the first month. In the beginning, I thought it was such a chore to drink all those soups, but I gotta tell ya, my milk supply was considerably better when my dad made me soup for every meal, before I requested more variety. Although it might have been just as good to drink a lot of water; hard to say.

My son was born in Singapore but my mom was with me so i didn't need a confinement nanny, though we did already have full time live in help. My friends used a confinement nanny. I think the cost of it was 2-3000? I don't really recall. She did everything though. Cooked (groceries was included in the price), cleaned, helped with baby and basically just made sure the mom was able to rest and recover.

Sorry, I'm not any help in terms of leads. My mom stayed with me both times after pregnancy. She didn't really make me anything fancy. She just made me this date drink everyday. It's just red dates and black beans boiled in water.

Wow, $4k a month! That's pretty pricey!

Not related to an in-house confinement nanny but I thought this was interesting: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/05/nyregion/bringing-an-asian-tradition-for-new-mothers-to-new-york.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

@sooz: That's awesome for them! I couldn't justify having a nanny though. I more so wanted the 1 month nanny for all the cooking and cleaning, then help with the baby when needed. But $4K is just waaay too rich for our blood!

@shopaholic: I was worried about that too, but they are through a legitimate agency. I think it's probably because they receive room and board and that's considered part of their salary. I know, the price is so low, it's shocking.

@sooz: That is such a good price, especially for the Bay Area, where everything is so expensive! Maybe (and I don't mean any offense by this), they are not all "legal"? These prices I was quoted were by official "agencies" that specifically do just the one-month contracts. Not full-time nannies that stay for a long time.
