We have had our nanny accompany us on a trip.... its a little different because we paid her 8+ hours a day anyway, so she just kept getting her full-time salary while we were away. We paid for her flights, she paid for lodging.... We discussed all the plans prior to leaving.

I would think for a babysitter agreement, you could discuss a flat rate that she would be agreeable to. And definitely pay for lift tickets. Plan out exactly when you will want her, and make sure you're all on the same page. Like 1 or 2 date nights, day-time coverage, etc.

Hi-I'm a former user who doesn't have an active account anymore, but wanted to chime in because we just did this so thought it might be of help:-).

We took our part-time nanny with us on a family trip this December. It was 3 total kids. A 6 year old, 5 year old, and an 18-month-old. My brother found this article before we went, and it illuminated a lot: https://www.nannycounsel.com/blog/traveling-with-your-nanny-its-your-vacation-not-theirs

I went on three trips like this as a sitter and nanny in my early 20s. This is what was done for me: All travel expenses, a designated room and bathroom for myself, all meals, etc. I went further, though, and set the following restrictions on us so she wouldn't be too overwhelmed:

*Paid her a flat daily rate for up to 8 hours of "on" time, and if we went beyond that she'd get an hourly rate.
*She was never with all three kids alone during the day (in our case, at the pool). It was either the two older kids who just needed a pool monitor, or the toddler, but never all three. However, she was responsible for getting all three kids to bed so the adults could go out to dinner.
*She had the afternoon off (generally 1-5 or so), and could go to the pool/beach/etc.
*I got her a massage at the local spa as an extra perk. She'd never had one and is still talking about it.

I sent an email outlining everything beforehand and told her there was 0 pressure in coming. I said we'd love to have her, but her future job with us had no bearing or anything like that. She came and seemed to love it. We stuck to our outlined rules, and we all had a really nice vacation.

Feel free to wall me if you'd like further details. Happy to talk by email!

My friend used to babysit for a couple of family’s near Killington so maybe you could look for someone up there already? Would save on some of the expense.

I’ve never done this, just because it’s so expensive, but I’ve been tempted. In my area, it’s generally expected that you pay their hourly rate (for 4 kids, not just the 2 if she’s watching all 4. Also, 4 kids seems like a handful for 1 sitter), plus all travel related expenses (lodging, food, room to herself), plus a flat rate for coming along on a working weekend trip. She’s giving up a weekend of her free time and even if she’s into skiing, it’s not super likely she’s normally go by herself? So the lift ticket it a gray area to me, but the pay for 4 kids plus an overnight flat rate stipend plus all travel expenses seems like a must.

Our former nanny went from full time with us to part time when my youngest was old enough for preschool. I found her another family who needed help just twice a week. They took her and her husband along on a trip to Europe to watch their kids m and paid the flights and separate hotel rooms plus hourly rate when she was with the kids alone.

@rnmcdonnell: will she have her own room (that you are paying for? Or are you getting a condo that she gets her own space in?

I’m no help, I don’t actually know how to approach it.

I’ve never done this but I did babysit when I was younger (never a situation like this but I would do an occasional overnight). I would definitely pay her on top of everything else. Maybe a flat rate per day that’s comparable to the hours she will actually be working with a little extra on top? It’s still a vacation but it’s not one she picked and she will be there to help you.

I would think of it as a work trip... while it might be fun, she still might have rather spent that time doing something else.

I know a lot of people who’ve done this and it is typical to offer a nightly stipend as well as normal hourly rate for when they’re working (in my area nightly rate is around $125). Not sure the cost of lift tickets.

Thank you!! That does make sense - I was considering au pairs and how they essentially get paid by room and board with a small additional stipend, and I was thinking since she would have 2-3 full days of 7 hours of time to herself we would pay for, that it would kind of count towards "paying" her in a way.

BUT I totally appreciate the analogy of the work trip and that makes sense. I like your suggestion of basically breaking it into times that we'd pay her (ie, for the hours of actual babysitting) and then communicating that she would have the 7 hours of daytime free time/activities we would cover and we would just be looking for light assistance in the mornings/meals.

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated!

I haven’t done this myself, but as a former nanny I would expect to be paid. I’d probably expect meals, lift tickets and my typical hourly rate for when you are out at night. Personally I’d be okay with helping getting the kids ready for ski school everyday w/o the hourly rate but I’d explicitly tell her your expectations ahead of time to make sure you’re all on the same page. I’d also give her a time estimate for your nights out: “We’d pay you your normal rate from the hours of 5pm-11pm on X nights.”

I think of it as any other “work trip.” When a company takes you on a work trip and expects you to do some work (even along with some fun!), they’d never say “We aren’t going to pay you your normal salary these days because you’re on a vacation.” You’d still expect to be paid.

I have seen people do this but I don't know anyone personally to ask how this works. We are taking a long ski weekend with our 2 kids and my sister/BIL and their 2 kids. Originally a grandparent was going to join us and be available to watch the kids at night, but had something come up and can't go anymore.

I am considering asking one of our sitters to come and help with the kids (meals, getting them geared up, that kind of stuff) and then watch them at night while we go out. I am trying to figure out how to even propose this. I'm pretty sure she does ski and the kids will all be in ski school during a couple of the days, so I thought about offering to pay for her lift tickets and/or other activities she might want to do during the day, plus all meals. But not sure if I also need to pay her on top of that? Or is the payment that she gets a free ski weekend in exchange for watching the kids? I don't want to offend her by not offering to pay for her time if that is what would be typical.

Would welcome any thoughts from people who have done this!! Thank you!
