@Mrs. Tiger: YES! this is us. he signs furiously "go" & "all done". Then he waves bye to the doctor and the nurse. When those don't work he points to the door. Then we graduate to pulling on mom, crying, running circles around the room etc. So far we haven't done the hair pulling or throwing my glasses on the floor too much in public but it occasionally happens too. ;) And yes I'm supposed to make sense of doctor-speak while all this happens!! ;)

@jhd: lol yes! "Let me convey this very important information to you while a small child tries to rip out your hair and/or pull your clothes off and/or run away since they're tired of being in this office" or maybe that's just mine ;)

@Mrs. Tiger: yes our issue this week was definitely me not having enough medical knowledge to understand everything. Thankfully the doc called me back this am when we could have a conversation that wasn't interrupted by a toddler so that helped! ;)

@jhd: +1 to email or portal or something. D's GI team has a to-do list with things to change & the next appointment time that I have to sign, so they always make sure I understand that.

I have trouble bringing up long term questions since I often feel rushed and/or like the doc will just laugh me off and say I'm thinking too far in the future. This goes the same for fundamental questions that I'm still trying to understand since I don't have a medical background. Agree with others that jotting them down (or emailing it to them ahead of time) is helpful.

Do you have access to a portal or something via the doctor's office? We do, and it allows me to send emails to the doctor in case I have questions or need clarification on a treatement plan.

@jhd: Google can be terrifying! I feel like we have been living at the doctors lately. I am always open to be a sounding board.

@Ms.Badger: that's a great suggestion. It would definitely help me to do that. Thank you!

@MrsRcCar: yes, I do need to talk things out with DH more before too. That really does help. He was the one who helped me get my list of questions today. And I try to research ahead of time too but today was unexpected and also sometimes Google is too scary. ;) but thanks. I know you have had way too much practice at interacting with doctors lately too! ;)

@Mrs Green Grass: I think I will definitely ask for email addresses from here on out. I do much better at organizing my thoughts once I am home! Thanks!

I always need the process time afterwards, so maybe you could just say you'll be emailing later in the day to ask questions so it's out there. I have a friend who keeps a notebook by I'm not very organized.

@jhd: I keep a journal and also use my iPhone notes app. I still forget and end up calling the office again. I am a huge researcher so I always have questions about things. Most recently I knew to advocate for more in depth celiac testing. I do bounce a lot of questions off DH before appointments. It helps me to formulate any question I could have.

Big hugs momma.

@jhd: I would repeat the news back to them which ensured that I understood what they said and sometimes just putting the news into my words got my brain firing up questions. It also takes the conversation back to the beginning"what is happening" phase from the later "what we are going to do" stage which means you get everything twice which helps me with retention.

Not a chronic mama, but I have a list on my iPhone that I use for upcoming appointments. As I think of questions throughout the week I add them to the list. At the end of the appointment I pull out my list and go through questions one by one.

Leading up to the appt, I write down any questions I have on the Notes app on my iPhone. Our docs always close appts with some Q&A time so I remember to pull it out.

I'm not good at coming up with questions on the spot though. Thankfully our doctors respond to email throughout the day.

How do you keep track of questions you have for your LO's healthcare providers? Are you good at coming up with questions on the spot when you get new diagnoses or plans for LO's care?

Basically, I spend all my energy trying to keep LO calm and I can't think straight. I can't even begin to think about questions until I'm driving home or trying to explain to DH what's going on!

Today after our ENT appointment I just ended up calling back to leave a message for the doctor. He had the afternoon off, but the nurse was able to address some questions and said she would have him call me in the morning as well.

Any tips or tricks?
