Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad to hear it sounds like I'm not being unreasonable expecting a bit more communication from them. It's hard because aside from the communication issues I'm pretty happy with the daycare. Communication is huge though so I kind of want to push it. I emailed the director because I can never get in contact with her any other way so hopefully she will open to implementing some policies/practices a la what you said @Mauxie.

@Becky: To me, that's not acceptable protocol. We get emails when there is any staff change, and they have a two week process of transitioning rooms in which the parents participate with an orientation night in the new room at the end of the transition. We also get daily notes about the day and a once a week email with pictures from the teacher. Finally, the director writes a newsletter once a month.

@Becky: LO's head preschool teacher's last day was today. We didn't get any communication from the director but the teacher told me a week ago. There is another teacher in the room who is staying. I don't know who the new teacher will be.

We know when room changes are coming because they happen at set ages. My younger son just switched and how it worked is at the beginning of last week, they told us this would be his transition week. He visited an hour the first day, a few hours on day two, stayed for lunch on day three, nap on day four, and all day today, next week he officially starts in the toddler room. We don't usually get too much notice about turnover but there hasn't been TOO much of it - mostly it's teachers going on mat leave so you have a sense when they'll be leaving. I've never been introduced to a new teacher. We get a monthly email but really it's just a calendar with the days the centre is closed and who's having a birthday that month. I see the director on a regular basis but really if I want any specific information, either from her or the teachers, I have to ask.

At our first daycare, where we were for 18 months, this was super standard. Drove me freaking NUTS. A parent should know who is watching their kid all day! We finally switched because communication and staffing kept getting worse and worse. We're at another national franchise type place now, and it is TOTALLY different. We are told. We know who is with our kid. Teachers are consistent.

At our daycare they transition in August with the start of the regular school year. They do a meet the teacher in the evening for parents and kids. We get daily notes for the younger onesabout their activities, what they eat and how they napped. For the older ones we don't get notes but their activities and how they napped are on the board when you go in. We get lesson plans even for the babies every week. We've gotten an email the one time an assistant teacher left to have a baby.

We get a monthly newsletter for the whole school and class specific monthly calendar. They do send emails for new hires and when people leave. But I do feel like there are certain times when no emails about staff changes are sent.

For transitions, we are told in advance. They then write up a whole transition plan (usually 2 weeks to a 1 month transition). For example, the first week, they visit to say hi, then visit for an hour each morning, then longer until they nap there, and over the course of the month, work up to a full day.

The plan includes the name of the next class/teacher. It's pretty comprehensive. And they do a cute little "my first day" picture, etc and also a formal "goodbye party" at the previous class (sing a song, have applesauce or another snack). The teachers also prepare a portfolio of pictures/work from the class to pass on to the family to keep.

As far as regular communication, we get weekly emails/memos and news. For incoming teachers, we get a quick biography (paragraph on background) and a picture (via email) and start date. They also post this at the entrance as well as on white board in the classroom so it's not like a random new face I see for the first time on their first day. Also the admin make a point to encourage teachers to speak first and greet parents saying I'm new, etc. I'm at a large center so there are lots of staff! They also tell us about when teachers leave, a reason is usually included, and an end date; or if it's for training we are told in advance when there will be subs.

Ours never tells us about staff leaving. I mean, they tell us later if we ask where they went. But they don't have a lot of actual turnover. They have a couple of teachers who have family abroad, so they take turns leaving on very long vacations, and when we don't see them we pretty much figure it was their turn and they'll be back in a couple of months.

Both my girls (16 months and 3.75 years) just transitioned to new rooms at their daycare. We didn't really get much of a heads up, and once we were in the new rooms we didn't get introduced to the teachers and aides, or get a tour of the room. A few weeks into the 16 month olds new room both teachers left and no one told us this was happening. We haven't been given any updates or introductions to the temp teachers and aides.

We also never hear anything from the director, and only hear from the rooms if we ask specific questions. There are no newsletters or anything.

Is it wrong of me to be expecting a little more communication? What's your daycare like?
