I don't understand it completely, but it's a genetic disorder in which a person lacks the amino acid to break down phenylalanine, so aspartame and other products that contain it can create dangerous toxicities in their body.<br /> One of my friends doesn't have PKU, but she literally felt like she had a stroke one day. She had all the symptoms - slurring, lack of control on one side, impaired motor skills, massive headache. After extensive testing, the hospital discovered the cause was aspartame poisoning! She had a moderate Diet Coke habit.
