Just called his Ped to ask about changing meds. Im waiting for a call back from his Dr. I don't think it is the let down because it only happens when his stomach bubbles and that wouldn't be because of let down. Plus, he nurses just fine when I am insanely engorged too. Plus it isn't just at let down but the entire nursing session.

I'm not too sure about a chiro. It would be something I would consider if we can't find anything elsr. I just have never bought into it personally.

And I am sure gas has some role! I have eliminated all gassy foods from my diet (which apparently contains most of my favorite foods) and I haven't seen a change but I figure it can't hurt. I just haven't found any other way to help him relive that gas pain. He only poops every few days but my DD was like that and I have always been told that's normal for BF babies. Gas drops and Gripe Water aren't working... Hopefully I hear back from his Dr. soon.

Another vote for Prevacid/omeprezole. Zantac didn't help my son and it hurt my supply when he wouldn't eat. Are you sure the bubbling isn't hunger?

@Mrs Hedgehog: do you have a forceful letdown that might be contributing to him swallowing a lot of air? How is his latch? I might try a LC to see what they say. I know baby chiro is controversial but I'd probably try it out on desperate situation.

@Mrs Hedgehog: it sounds like he has a lot of gas too. I would start by eliminating major gassy foods from your diet. Try gas drops, bicycles, the Windi was very helpful for us for dd2. I wished it was around when I had #1!

I also agree with trying prevacid if he's just on zantac. I have a friend whose daughter was inconsolable during feedings due to reflux. Zantac didn't really help, but prevacid was life changing after two weeks when it fully kicked in.

DS had silent reflux and his main symptom was pain during feedings. Feeding him was a battle and some feedings would take an hour or more! I also had a bit of overactive letdown which was making things worse. Block feeding definitely helped that immensely! As for the reflux meds, we started with Zantac which worked for maybe a week or so, upped the dosage but it didn't help. I went completely off dairy and soy but I'm not sure that did anything. Then he even started refusing bottles bc of pain during feedings - close to when I was going back to work so I freaked. We switched him to Prilosec around 10-11 weeks and it was life-changing within a few days. He was off reflux meds altogether by about 6 months and has no lasting sensitivities to food or anything. I would definitely ask your doctor to try different meds if your current ones aren't working, but know that they do take some time to work and the dosage is tricky to get right when babies are growing so much so fast!

@Mrs Hedgehog: first of all, this is so hard and I'm sorry you're going through this! We had something similar with our son and what worked for us was Zantac, 3 sessions of massage therapy, a lactation consultant assessment, and my wife figuring out she had a fast letdown. She would manually express into a cloth before a feed and it made a world of difference. Good luck! It's so so hard to see them in pain.

@Mrs Hedgehog: I lived this with my DD as well. She was on Zantac which helped with the spitting. I took her for a few sessions with the chiropractor in town that is certified to work with infants and young children, the adjustments are nothing like what adults get. There was a measurable difference in her behaviour after that.

Also I have overactive letdown and over supply which would irritate her stomach issues so I worked with an LC to manage that through a combination of reclined nursing, smaller more frequent feelings and block feeding after my supply was well established. Feel free to wall me if you have any other questions.

I have a newborn (3 weeks old now) and I also notice this when I breastfeed sometimes! As soon as the initial letdown begins and she's gulping away I hear this loud gurgling and churning coming from her tummy. It sounds so awful, and she does writhe around and randomly cry out after a while, due to discomfort. In her case it's not all out screaming. This happened with DD#1 too, so I've just accepted it as normal, since they aren't screaming/crying for long, just here and there. I guess what I'm saying is that while a bit of gurgling seems normal, in your case it sounds like it's having a pretty bad effect on your LO and who knows, a PT/Chiro might have the magic key. Sigh, I can't wait till they grow out of this though!

So this might be kind of out there (way out there), but I'm currently receiving PT for a knee problem. The last time I went, the PT noticed that my hip alignment is off, and started to check things and she asked me if I ever have stomach/digestive issues. I do and I told her so. She started poking around a bit, found something around the intestines that seemed tight, applied some sort of pressure/manipulation and all of a sudden, my stomach started gurgling away. She had released something. So all of that to say, maybe there could be another approach?

My son was on Zantac and gas drops for about a month when it stopped working. He went ten days without sleeping and just screaming and so we switched to Prevacid and did a two week run on Nutramigen with gas drops in every bottle while I eliminated more foods. I had already been off dairy and most soy and went off crucifers, beans, spices, nightshades, all caffeine, tea, coffee, booze, even decaf tea and coffee, soda, anything acidic and just pumped and froze during those two weeks. After two weeks I slowly added in one BM feeding a day until he was back on mostly breastmilk. It did take a few days for the Prevacid to kick in but between that and whatever I did to my milk he was a totally different baby within a month. He started Prevacid at 11 weeks and was off reflux meds by 5.5 months and I could eat everything without issue shortly thereafter. Coffee and chocolate were major crutches that I eliminated and I have a suspicion that really helped.

6 weeks is a hard time - it's peak fussiness. My baby was really fussy with feeds around that time and also had a very gurgly stomach. We had feed very slowly and with lots of breaks and burping. We also used gas drops prior to feeds which I do think helped. But overall it got better on its own. Hang in there.

Are you willing to try a little formula? At the recommendation of my daughters NICU doctors, I thicken some my pumped breastmilk with enfamil ar. It has really helped us. you're breastfeeding, you could top your baby off with a small bottle. For us, when the gurgling is really bad, I add more formula to her bottles. On a good day, I hardly use any.

DS is 6 weeks and has reflux. It took us nearly a month before his nurse and Dr. believed us. (Though most of that I blame on the nurse because I don't think she told his Dr everything we told her. I have never liked that nurse.) They got a sono for Pyloric Reflux (which is surgical) and luckily he tested negative so they put him on reflux meds. This was a week ago. It worked amazingly well. He started actually sleeping vs screaming all night/day. He spits up less too.

Here is the problem, the only thing not solved by these meds? He screams in pain most feedings. I can hear his stomach bubbling and he starts screaming. I mentioned gas to his Ped but he said that babies don't get gas THIS badly and predictably. It has gotten to the point that I listen to his belly as he starts eating. If I hear it bubbling, it is going to be a long screaming feeding. If I don't, it will be short and sweet. I have gotten used to the screaming as if that's just how babies eat but I know it isn't.

Honestly, I don't know what else to do. He is on meds but he still hurts.
