@EBSC: thanks. I just ordered the “3rd generation” version. Hoping it helps save me a few trips to the pediatrician.

@foodnerd81: I think I got a middle of the road one. Not the old version, but not the one with all the bells and whistles since I wasn’t sure I’d know what to do with the extra.

The learning curve wasn’t bad, it comes with a little chart of what Normal ears should look like, and I googled a bit. My son has tubes, so I’m mostly making sure it’s not horrendous— the one time I caught an infection, it was more obvious than I thought it would be, and did save me the trip in to the ped (I called, we’ve seen lots of this, got Rx over the phone).

We have the Dr. Mom one and it was really helpful when my daughter was young. My husband is a whiz at it; it took me longer to figure it out.

We use dr. Mom too. You can google some pics online so you know what you’re looking at first. I find if you pull down on the ear lobe I can see better

@EBSC: @gingerbebe: was it pretty easy to figure out how to use? Does it matter which type you get? (Seeing a range of prices on amazon from like $15-50).

I have one! My almost two year old has tubes, and it’s helpful to see if they’re clogged or not. I got one off of Amazon, I think it was Dr Mom brand, for under $30

Not this but because of issues I had, we had to get a blood pressure monitor, and we also have a pulse ox from Dh having bad pneumonia, so if ear infections are frequent I would probably get one so if it's obviously not the cause I wouldn't have to take them in (and if the cause didn't become known I'd take them in, obviously.) I'd get a cheaper option than $300 if I could but I have no idea what those go for!

Does anyone have an otoscope they use to check on ear infections at home? How did you figure out how to use it? I was just looking at Cell Scope, a smart phone attachment, that looks cool but is $300.

I’m not saying I would want to diagnose and treat from home (not actually a medical professional in any way). But it would be so nice to look and see if their ears were red or irritated at all or if they are just whiny for some other reason.
