We don't go to the park often... but when we do, he loves the swing so clearly i need to play with him. He's not super independent yet (he's a scared baby) so he will not go alone in the bigger toys.

But this winter, I will definitely play outside with him, make forts and such. Can't wait!

She's still little (11 mos) and wants to put everything in her mouth so I have to get on all fours and watch her like a hawk. I expect I'll still crawl around with her the next year or so and then stand back a little when she's actually interacting with other kids.

You're right though, Mr. Bee. It's exhausting!

@Runsyellowlites - exactly, she's still young so i can't assume that she'll scream if someone tries to take her or bother her.

@Heatherloveskenny - right, I'm just asking for the parents to pay attention! I was looking at them and they didn't even glance up from their phones once in a while.

@Andrea: Oh boy, those parents bother me...at a certain park there is always a table of mothers socializing while their children play, totally fine. But it's always their kids who are the bullies and they ignore what's going on because they're too busy. The parents on their phone's the whole time bug me as well.

I think standing back and still paying attention is fine though.

@Andrea yea I want to say at 18mth I was much closer to DS as he played... it's not like he could come tell me some weirdo was around... plus at that age we was trying to climb EVERYTHING (well he still does) and randomly jump off so I tried to stay close to avoid trips to the er. lol

Mr.Bee you sound like my husband - he likes to stand back and watch whereas I'm all about playing with DS! I think once he's older (2 1/2 right now) we'll stand back a bit more but I know I'll miss these times so why not :)

Ok, sorry, guess I was thinking more for younger kids...I should clarify. This was a playground more geared towards kids my daughter's age, 18 months. If my daughter was 7, then perhaps I would check my phone, too!

DS is just a bit too exhaustive for me to play with very long when we go to the playground.

At 7 y/o he STILL likes me to get out there and play with him, and occasionally I do, but for the majority of the time I try and just let him run his necessary laps to expend energy.

I've never worried while at the playground though... DS has always been very clear of the rules and he often calls me or comes by to "check in"... in fact he's outside now riding his bike with the other kiddos and he'll probably come by for a run in in the next 20 minutes or so. lol

We went to the playground earlier today and I remembered this question because I saw 2 moms sitting on a bench with the exact same slouched over pose, totally absorbed with their Crackberries, and not watching their kids. That makes me uncomfortable because I would always want to know where my daughter is on the playground. I am more worried about her getting kidnapped than getting hurt. I think that even if you don't actively play with your kids, you should at least have one eye on them and not on your phone.

I would prefer to just stand back and watch, and only intervene with Charlie needs help. But he loves to play with one of us at the playground, and since Mrs. Bee is oh-so-pregnant that means that I've been getting tagged in.

All in all, I would prefer that Charlie play with other kids rather than with his parents. But given his vast preference, I've been crawling around the playground lately. I've been pleasantly surprised by the results. Playing together has actually brought Charlie and me much closer together!

I'm sure that soon enough, he won't even want me with him at the playground. So I should just be appreciative for this time we have together now, right? I have to admit though, it's pretty exhausting!

How about you: do you get down on your hands and knees and play with your kids... or do you stand back and watch them from a distance and only intervene when they need help?
