@Mama Bird: I can pay it, of course...I just wanted to ask to see if they could do anything since we're there all the time. But then to just say no and not schedule it was too much.

@spaniellove: your pedi refused to see you because of the copay? Wow. They don't deserve to be a pediatricians office.

You sound so overwhelmed... hugs. I don't know if I can help somehow, but will wall you tonight.

@Applesandbananas: I contacted our EI service coordinator to have him removed and canceled his 4 month appt with the ped. If there's one thing people have taught me since he was born it's that there's no point in trying to get help because no one will help us.

@spaniellove: I think you said you were pursuing EI, can you reach out to your service coordinator/case manager and talk to them about the whole situation? They would probably be able to help! I'm not sure what services are available in your area, but I think your EI coordinator would at least be able to point you to resources to get you through this rough patch.

@twodoghouse: I just don't have the resources to start over right now. When I called yesterday to try to schedule a follow-up with our ped and asked if they could maybe give us a break on the copay since we now owe several thousand dollars in medical bills from the last few months (although not to them!), they refused to schedule the appointment. It's all such BS.

We were given the okay to let her sleep at 5 weeks (about when she reached her birth weight) before that we had to wake her every 3-4 hours to feed. Next one, I will most likely let sleep babies know when they are hungry and it seems silly to wake them up.

@spaniellove: That's absurd. Is there another peds office or hospital you could go to? I can't believe you're having to deal with that attitude! If he is feverish you could at least give him some Tylenol, though, so might be worth checking even if you don't call the dr.

@twodoghouse: I don't know. At this point I don't even think it would be worth checking because when we called a week ago to say he had a fever and tried to get him medical care it got us into this mess.

The message they kept sending us at the hospital was essentially "just let us know if/when he dies; then we'll believe you".

@spaniellove: Has he been running a fever or been acting sick (other than the spitting up which may be reflux not illnesss, right?). Maybe he's not feeling well? I'd probably wake him if I were you, but I'm sort of paranoid about making sure my LOs get enough food. Maybe you could try smaller bottles more frequently? That really helps my son with his reflux.

I was told that once they passed their birth weight and had a good bill of health ( no jaundice for example ) that you didn't need to wake them because they would wake up of they were hungry and needed to eat. My DD slept through starting at 2 months and I didn't worry about waking her.

I got a lecture in the hospital right after she was born because she slept 5-6 hours her first two nights after birth. The second night I tried to wake her to eat and she was having none of that, she just wanted to sleep. Since that one attempt, I have never woken her to eat. She is doing just fine.

Okay I think something is off with his sleep/feeding, doctors be damned. I love getting the long breaks, but today he had 4 oz at 6am, threw up, 3 oz at close to 9am, and now has been sleeping since then with no sign of waking up. Normally he'd have eaten almost 20 oz by now and has only had 7.

If his weight gain has been ok overall, it's fine to let him sleep. FWIW my son gained weight very slowly at first and was in the lower percentiles for months. He slept through the night anyway starting at two months. He totally caught up with the eating during the day :) And once we started solids, he started gaining weight very nicely... although he'd lose a lot of weight the first few times he caught colds.

My LO was sleeping 6+ stretches (during the day not at night) the first two days after she was born. We were in the hospital both of those days & I kept asking the nurses & doctor if I should wake her up & every single time they told me no. I'm of the opinion that if they are hungry then they will tell you. I know for a fact letting him go all night is not cruel!

The fact the nurse used the term "cruel" is a red flag that her comment was motivated by some personal opinion and not medical facts. If your doctor is ok with his weight gain and feeding, then just count your blessings on that awesome sleep!

I'm so glad you guys told me what is considered okay! His weight gain overall has been fine; it's just very recently that he's fallen behind a little and is at the 11th percentile so he lost all the progress he's made since he was born. But I doubt that the nurses were concerned about his weight since there wasn't a feeding plan and even the GI specialist made a ridiculous comment about how I shouldn't stop to burp him and I should just let him throw up.

Cruel? Was she trying to scare you?

I agree with the other PP's that as long as they've reached their birth weight and are doing ok with weight, it shouldn't be an issue.

I'm sorry the nurse scared you. I don't think that's fair and if it IS a concern for your babe, I think there were plenty of other ways to bring it up with you. What a B!

I don't believe there's ever a reason to wake a baby up to feed of they are at a good weight and are nourished and healthy. They will do what their body needs them to. As long as he's gaining weight, leave him alone. Tell that nurse to STFU

Our ped told us at their one month well check that usually she lets babies sleep as long as they will once they reach birth weight. However our babies were small (still 0 percentile) and took a while to get back to birth weight, so she wanted us to keep waking every 4 hrs at night (every 3 during day, although they never reached 3 hrs!). At two month well check she said let them go as long as they will at night (was usually 5 hrs at that point). Blake was still 0 percentile and Alice was only fifth percentile, but they were growing well on their own curves so we were given the ok. FWIW after our medical drama recently, Alice started sleeping through the night. I think she needed her rest because she was being tortured by medical staff during the day!

I swear my son had a mechanism installed in him that woke him every 4 hours to eat, it was like clockwork. He was never a big gainer, so I kept it up as long as he was waking.
