-- Stopped swaddling at maybe three months? I tried to switch to a Merlin suit, but he rolled in that within a couple weeks, so we went to sleep sacks. He's still in one at 20 months.
-- Stopped feeding on demand/at night when he stopped on his own. He was only doing it occasionally by a year or so, and stopped night feeds completely by 14 months. But then he started waking super early (like 5 or 5:30). He'd nurse and be up for the day.
-- Transitioned to crib at six months.
-- Just sleep trained recently, at 20 months. Shortly after he weaned himself completely. I now wish we'd done it sooner. It made bedtime SO easy, and he sleeps way later.

Thank you all!

I tried to use just the sleep sack last night, and it went relatively well. It was a little harder to get him to settle back after the 4am feed b/c I think he was enjoying the newfound freedom of being able to wave his arms around, but he didn't wake up anymore often than normal, which is what I was worried about.

My husband loves to hold our son for awhile when he's sleeping in the evening, and will run to him if he hears him start to fuss before DH goes to bed. He just likes to make him happy, and it's sweet. But I do all the night wakings and am tired. I'd kind of like to start building better sleep habits when we put him down in the evening - i.e. sleepy but awake - but have yet to fully hash out that dispute with my husband who doesn't want him to cry...

@Mrs. Goose: We've actually been using the swaddle me up since he was born, as he hated having his arms down. We just got the transitional ones a couple of weeks ago when he outgrew the smaller size. I hadn't thought about just letting one arm out though... it's awesome that the wing things just zip off - it will get hot in our house during summer but daycare is kept a bit on the colder side so I suspect he will be using them as a sleepsack for awhile.

@periwinklebee: --Stop swaddling? First son, late, I would swaddle him with his legs out and one arm out for a long time. My baby now/she hasn’t started rolling yet at 6 months, so still swaddled :)

--Stop feeding on demand at night (or before a certain time at night)?
First son: haha. Well, i started trying at maybe 15 months or so when he got diagnosed with cavities. It was an extremely slow process tilll he was totally weaned st 2.5.
Not started any limiting with the baby, I think about it but probably won’t.
--Transition to crib?
Son: haha never.
Baby: she is still in a basinett but in a different room and I plan to put her in the crib soon!
--Sleep train?
Son: never
Baby: thinking about it, but probably never.

Just wanted to share my alternate experiences, I know this isn’t particularly helpful :silly:

--Stop swaddling?

1 week - my kids never really liked swaddling

--Stop feeding on demand at night (or before a certain time at night)?

DS: 10 weeks
DD: 11 weeks
Both gave up night feeding on their own.

--Transition to crib?

Upon coming home from the hospital. They did spend some time in our bed when I couldn't get them back down in the crib.

--Sleep train?

DS: 3 weeks
DD: 3 weeks (fail), 6 weeks (fail), 12 weeks (success)

For DD, the first three weeks did manage to get her to stay in the crib all night which was my main requirement. Both nursed to sleep, but if they woke up in the transition, they would go back to sleep. I know it's early, but I don't do well with cosleeping. I needed them out of my bed.

@periwinklebee:
--Stop swaddling? Just now at 5 months when he started to roll over.
--Stop feeding on demand at night (or before a certain time at night)?
I don't bother until a year old. I DO try to rock baby back to sleep first but have no issues feeding if needed
--Transition to crib?
We made the transition finally around 4 months out of the rock n play and swing for good.
--Sleep train?
We did with my first around the 9 month regression, but I hated it. Not sure I will do it with this little guy, but we shall see.

Stopped swaddling around 2 months I think.
Stopped feeding on demand at night around 6 months
Transitioned to crib- both my kids started off in a portable crib in our room from day 1, but we moved them to their own rooms around 3 months I think.
Sleep trained DD1 at 9 months. Only made it to 6 months before sleep training DD2.

@periwinklebee: if your guy really loves swaddling you could consider the swaddle me up 50/50 as a transitioning tool. It allows you to have the wings zipped off their hands one at a time if you like. And because he’s not rolling yet you could use it until he starts showing more signs and it allows them to still suck their hands/ sort of touch their face even though they’re sucking The material. It sits snugly around their body and keeps their arms up and near their face (but restricts the movement a bit so they don’t startle themselves awake) which is how most babies sleep unswaddled anyway until they’re starting to try and roll or sleeping on their tummy.

@ineebee: Congrats on the new baby!

@SweetiePie: You are super organized about this, as always. That's awesome that your LO is huge despite being so early. Mine's the opposite, small despite arriving quite late...

This has been super helpful...Seems like now could be a prime time to drop the swaddle. I think I'll try the crib transition followed by some gentle sleep training around the five month mark, as we're traveling a fair amount between now and then but home after that. I have a feeling it will be rough as LO loves sleeping next to me - and I hate having to get out of bed multiple times at night - but I'd eventually like my husband back in the bed! (he's been on the couch since the baby was born) I think I probably won't consider limiting feedings until he outgrows reflux, as he's still losing more calories than I'd like to it and is on the small side (but on his growth curve).

- stop swaddling - around 12-14 weeks if I recall correctly. Now for my current almost 12 week old we are transitioning out of the swaddle this week (using Merlin. He’s been in Merlin for almost all naps since about 10 weeks since he’s huge. Now we are phasing the swaddle out of night time sleep and using Merlin)

- we still feed on demand At night I guess? But we formula feed and he does 5-7 hour stretches so it’s not too bad).

- transition to crib - my first was 3 weeks and this one has been in crib since day 1.

- sleep train - I mean I guess we’ve sort of done some version of it since like a month old? Not cio but trying to extend him between feeds (ie giving paci instead of bottle). For my first son we started legit sleep training around 3/4 months. ie decreasing ounces and then CIO.
My nearly 12wo we’ve sort of been doing it for the last week or two. Not full on CIO (except for one day when nothing at all helped anyway) but letting him cry during the day and at night with checks. I plan to do full on hard core night weaning and extinction CIO after his 3 month appt next week. I’m 99% sure my Ped will tell me to go for it and I want that little nudge of reassurance. But for example last night/this AM I let him cry on and off for about an hour because he kept stopping and starting. He’s been putting himself back to sleep really well. Like cry for 5 mins (not even that hard) then doze off for a few. Etc. it’s how I remember it going with my first and it just got better and better.
Oh and we’ve always always down drowsy but awake and never hold for naps except for like wonder weeks when he’s a hot mess. So falling asleep on his own has never been an issue. It’s the night wakings and connecting daytime sleep cycles that we are working on.

We stopped swaddling right after 3 months, I transitioned her to daycare and then stopped swaddling.
We still feed MOTN at 6 months, E is only 25% for weight, typically she wakes once btwn 2 and 4, and has slept through the night. I try to give her 5-10 min before I feed her.
She sleeps flat on a pack in play and naps in her crib.
We have always put her down awake or drowsy so so far technically it hasn't been sleep training.

--Stop swaddling? Around 3 months.
--Stop feeding on demand at night (or before a certain time at night)? Probably around 10-12 weeks.
--Transition to crib? 6 weeks.
--Sleep train? 6-8 weeks we do drowsy but awake and allow 10 minutes of fussing when we put down and at any wake ups. We did extinction CIO for DS1 at 11-12 weeks. DS2, we didn't really need to do much other than extend the amount of time we allowed fussing to 15 minutes and checks worked for him fine.

- Swaddling: we weren’t consistent but before 7 weeks with DD2 because it was so hot out and we don’t have AC.

Stop feeding on demand: never with DD1, and DD2 didn’t really feed a lot in the middle of the night but we went to solely formula about 9 months and I didn’t do any middle of the night bottles.

- Transition to a crib: 8 weeks

- Sleep train: Ifeel like we sleep train every few months! I want to say my first go at it with DD2 was 6 months (later with DD1). My kids are not good sleepers.

--Stop swaddling: didn’t do this. And he started sucking his hands and then his thumb around 15 weeks so I was ecstatic to have that as his self-soothing thing.
--Stop feeding on demand at night (or before a certain time at night): they both stopped on their own. My first dropped night feeds at 3 months and kept a 5 am feed and went back to sleep for an hour or so until 15 months old. My second dropped night feeds at 4 months and is up for the day between 5-6.
--Transition to crib: mine are always in the crib from birth. In our room beside me for the first 6 months and then they go into their own room and we move the crib in there.
--Sleep train: started trying at 16 weeks because that’s when a sleep consultant I know said you could start. I just did it for naps since neither of my kids really needed it at night. But I stopped nursing to sleep at night at 18 weeks. So for me sleep training is no nursing to sleep and going into the crib awake.

Thank you all, this is super helpful!

My son doesn't show signs of rolling but does love to suck his fists, so dropping the swaddle may be our first step in an effort to encourage self soothing. I'm so exhausted, and have some deadlines coming up, that the thought of it making sleep worse (even if just temporarily for the transition) is not a happy one, but I'm sure it is inevitable...

We stopped swaddling both girls within the first week or 2 because they both hated it. So no help there, I guess.

We also transitioned to the crib pretty early (week 2-3).

We tried to sleep train around 6-7 months, and for us this involved trying to avoid nursing before 4am or so. So I would send DH in to pat her back/butt if she was only half awake. It didn't always work and I still have to go in to feed her if she's under the weather or teething, but after 3 days of patting we get through to 4:30/5am most nights (and sometimes longer if I'm really lucky!).

ETA - sleep training will likely be much easier once baby is sleeping on their own in the crib, so I'd tackle that one first!

--Sleep train? DS1 - 12 months and I feel like it never really stuck. He is 6 years old and he still doesn't sleep all night. DS2 - 6 months when we transitioned to the crib. Only took a few nights and he dropped his night feeding about a month later. He is 17 months and a fantastic sleeper.

Every baby is different. I think you just have to see what works for you. We tried sleep training DS1 before a year and he would scream for hours, we tried checks and no checks, nothing seemed to work until we got him off the bottle. Even now he still doesn't like to sleep alone. Sleep is hard and what worked for one baby might not work for another.

--Stop swaddling?
6 months. My son really liked to be swaddled and we did it for all naps and nighttime starting from when he was about a week old.
--Stop feeding on demand at night (or before a certain time at night)? I fed my son whenever he woke up, well into 2 years of age.
--Transition to crib? 5 weeks, when my mom came to help.
--Sleep train? After many stops and starts, we were successful with a gentle method at 11 months.

Stop swaddling? around 9/10 weeks, switched to Merlin suit. dropped Merlin at 4 mo for DS and 4.5 mo for DD I think?

Stop feeding on demand at night (or before a certain time at night)? transitioned to a cutoff time around 4mo coinciding with sleep training. both kids consolidated down to one night feeding at that point (although DD rarely did more than 1 since about 2mo). DS dropped his remaining night feeding around 7.5/8mo; DD dropped hers at 6.5/7mo.

Transition to crib? around 9/10 weeks (but in a flat bassinet before that).

Sleep train? DS - at 4mo on the nose. DD - around 5mo, but she was a better sleeper to start and never had a nurse to sleep association. we did a slightly modified Ferber with both.

--Stop swaddling? around 4 mos with both girls
--Stop feeding on demand at night (or before a certain time at night)? DD1 started sleeping from 9-6am around 12 weeks; I put her down around 7pm but then did a dream feed around 9pm. At around 8-9 mos we stopped the 9pm feed. DD2 was eating on demand over night until about 6 mos, then started sleeping through the night.
--Transition to crib? 10 weeks with DD1; 14 weeks with DD2 - she has reflux issues and I was terrified of her choking on spit up
--Sleep train? DD1 - we never had to, DD2 - we had to around 6 mos, but it was pretty painless if I am being truthful

Stop swaddling : 4 months, when both girls started to roll over

Stop feeding on demand at night: We dropped the night feed at 4 months for my first baby, 4.5 months for the second

Transition to crib: We did the crib from day 1 with our first. We used a rock n play for second baby and transitioned her at 4 months when she started to roll over.

Sleep train: Well, we sleep trained from the beginning with both girls, in that we followed a schedule and tried to stretch out their night feedings so they could distinguish day from night. We officially sleep trained with CIO at 11 weeks for our first daughter and 12 weeks for our second.

--Stop swaddling? Never swaddled, he used a sleep sack for the first couple weeks, but then that was it.

--Stop feeding on demand at night (or before a certain time at night)? When he weaned, around 10 ish months

--Transition to crib? Ummmmm... about that... I'll get back to you when I finally get that done. My recommendation from the other side of it is do it as soon as possible so you're not co-sleeping with a bed hog 2 year old

--Sleep train? See above... Should have, could have, would have...

Stop swaddling: Around 4 months, when he started rolling and hit his sleep regression

Stop feeding on demand at night (or before a certain time at night: Around 5.5 months because I was going back to work. I tried to night-wean and was semi successful but if he woke at 4am or after I would feed him.

--Transition to crib? 4 months for naps, 8 months for night.

--Sleep train? Ehhh.... 5.5 months for nightweaning, 8 months for crib at night, 10 months again..... it would stick for like a month.

Never swaddled. My hospital did an arms out swaddle and we were never great at it.

Feed on demand MOTN. Around 9-10 months I stopped giving LO a bottle when he woke up in MOTN. He started expecting it and DH thought it was unnecessary. After two nights of offering water instead of milk LO stopped waking up.

Transitioned to a crib- 6 weeks. Subsequently I put him in my bed and formed that habit.

Sleep train- I don’t think we ever did that 100% correctly. He was STTN at 5 weeks except for the wake up to feed. We moved him from his glider to his crib after he was asleep in our arms.

--Stop swaddling? Around 4 months probably? But with LO1 she went on to use the magic merlin sleep suit for another 2 months; and LO2 was in a zipadee zip for another 2 months

--Stop feeding on demand at night (or before a certain time at night)? LO1 night weaned herself around 6 months; LO2 still nurses overnight and she's 16 months  We bed share with both

--Transition to crib? Never

--Sleep train? Also never
