We have a simple "no TV when LO is around" rule. The only exception was the newborn days but even then we made sure his head/eyes was/were situated away from the screen.

LO is 16 months old and doesn't look at the TV much even when we watch a show. I have to work hard to get him to sit and watch a few minutes of a disney/pixar movie with me. I do want to start having the tv on less, we are definitely guilty of using it as background noise pretty often. I guess I haven't felt pressed to make a move yet because he doesn't seem interested in the TV at all but I'm sure he's listening.

I'd say when he starts to watch himself. My oldest didn't care for TV at all until he turned three. And we had it on ALL THE TIME. The only time is when he hears a catchy commercial jingle and stops to watch and then as soon as it's over he's off to somewhere else. My youngest, however, loved it from day one. So now we almost never have the TV on at all. I can go days without turning it on...

It depends on the show.... things like Castle and Bones, have long been banned. Full House on Netflix, is a family affair!

We stopped around nine months when she started applauding asking with the crowd in a movie DH was watching.
Sometimes I have the news on in the morning and forget to turn it if before DD gets up. Last thing I need is her telling me about ISIS or Jian Ghomeshi.

I hadn't thought about this until recently, when she was in the room with a show on that had some scary content, foul language, etc. She usually doesn't pay much attention to the TV anyway. Most of the shows we watch after she's in bed (Walking Dead, Homeland, etc). But in the mornings I have the news on, and again often in the evenings after she gets home from daycare. Although the news is usually so awful that I should probably stop watching that with her too!

@lawbee11: Yes, he will! For the first couple weeks at least. So maybe that will be a good opportunity to catch up on some TV. Though we watch these shows with my brother, so it'll all depend on if he's available and if the weather is decent for him to make the drive to our house. But good suggestion! :D

@Adira: Will your DH be home with you while you're on maternity leave at all (I assume X will still be in daycare)? DH was home for a couple of weeks and we watched a TON of shows in those 2 weeks because those were the days when M was a sleepy newborn and would nap for hours. Unfortunately it was short-lived!

@lawbee11: Thanks for that! Maybe I'll just try to have us catch up on our shows before baby #2 arrives in December and then call it quits. It'll probably be too much work to manage two kids and try to pay attention to TV anyway.

As long as the show isn't scary we watch it, comedies we will watch and she doesn't really "get" the jokes (if it tends to be on the adult side.) Normally she's asleep but lately has been fighting it and sleeping on the floor or couch so we continue with our routine.

We don't watch our shows while LO is awake...we wait until she is in bed for the night or taking a nap on the weekends. DH will watch sports while she's in the room. I probably wouldn't even watch a show like Modern Family with her in the room, though. Not because of the screentime aspect but because we're usually out and about on the weekends or playing in her room. I see her so little during the week that I don't want to watch tv while she plays by herself. She goes to bed early enough (7pm) that there really isn't a need for us to watch our shows while she's awake. I think in your situation definitely by age 2 I'd stop watching anything with lots of inappropriate language in front of him.

@Mrs. Lion: Thanks for that insight! I didn't realize that, but that's a good point. Luckily, Xander doesn't get any screen time Monday - Friday because he's in daycare and the only up for a couple hours after that once he's home. And most weekends, he doesn't get any either (although now that it's football season, he gets football most of the afternoon on Sunday). So maybe it's not as big of a deal yet since it's pretty rare occurrence.

Though I definitely want to stop before he actually understands what's going on! Some of these shows (like Archer and The League) are definitely NOT appropriate for children!

When he started to move his head and look at the TV. I realized that even if he's not looking at the screen, he is hearing the language and that is an issue for me.

I am not anti-screentime by any means, BUT I am careful about the content and really changed my habits when my son was around 12 months of age. I just don't need him hearing foul language.

@Adira: he doesnt stop and watch, but it takes his attention from what he is doing and i have heard that is actually the downside to screen time...it affects their ability to hold their attention on one thing. Since i am home with him i try to be more cautious. If he was in daycare i probably wouldnt worry about it as much.

@LBee: i think it technically counts as screen time from birth, but i definitely had the tv on a lot for the first few months...i really didnt start paying attention until much later.

@Mrs. Lion: Hmmm! Xander's 20 months and for the most part, he doesn't even pay attention. He might glance at the TV for a couple seconds, but then he'll go back to playing. So I'm not sure if it's okay to continue watching certain stuff in front of him or not!

@LBee: I watched a TON of TV during my maternity leave (up to 12 weeks), so I think it's probably okay!! I started watching less and less around him as he got older, but I still have this one day a month that I get together with my brother and binge-watch our shows, and I'm wondering if I should maybe stop!

Following! I've wondered this. We leave the TV on with our 11 week old and I've wondered when it starts counting as "screentime." We will sometimes notice he's "watching" the screen but I think he's just looking at the colors.

When he started paying attention, maybe around 10 months? I know he doesnt understand, but by that point we just needed to be watching less tv in general, so i just save my tv watching for when he is napping. I will sometimes leave on parenthood or the voice, but i save criminal minds and those type shows for when he isnt around.

I wasn't sure if this should go under screentime or not...

At what age did you stop watching adult (PG-13+/TV-14+) shows and moves in front of your child?

In general, we don't really have the TV on around Xander. We watch our shows when he naps or goes to bed (although on Sunday he gets to watch football most of the day with daddy). But there are a few shows that Hubs and I watch with my brother and we get together once a month to catch up. Certain shows we only watch when Xander is napping or has gone to bed (The Walking Dead, specifically), but I'm wondering at what age I should probably stop letting him even be in the room when I'm watching other shows (like The League, Archer, Agents of SHIELD, etc).

Opinions?
