The four year old is getting there and actually took a bath by himself yesterday. I just hung around to make sure he doesn't slip and helped him get out. I won't trust him to do it alone for another year at least, cause he'll get carried away and either start jumping in the tub, or flood the bathroom.

My 5.5 year old can do it, I think. But, he's lazy and not super good so I at least need to help some.

@Mrs. Blue: LO1 (3.75)is actually really good at it in the shower. We still have to turn the shower on and adjust the temperature and help with shampooing (rinsing mainly) but other than that he handles it himself. LO2 (2) still needs help with shampoo and can do some of the soaping but not all. We just try to encourage them to be as independent as possible by letting them try and showing them how to do things.

@honeybear: Oh, five, that gives me hope! The boys can do the water in their bathroom, but I think doing the shampoo and rinsing will take a while still. I should start letting them practice, I suppose. And great point on the towels; Ours are way to high for them to reach.

My son just started showering at his request, he turned 6 last month. He still needs me to wash his hair, but he can soap himself and rinse.

5 for the shower. We don't have a tub where he normally bathes. The two keys for him were learning how to set the faucet to get warm, but not too hot, water and learning how to wash his hair and rinse it all out. (He might have been able to set the water at 4, but our faucet is pretty high up, making it hard for him to see exactly what setting he was getting, and he was still kind of rough on things like that at that point. Waiting a little made it easier/safer for everyone and everything, I think.)

Also, make sure that the towel is within reach. You'll probably want to put it down somewhere accessible instead of leaving it on the bar. Some of the towel bars in our house are too high for him to get the towels off easily without yanking on the bar.

Bath time is not my favorite, so I'm anxious for the day when they can do this on their own.

If you have LOs that have reached this magical stage, at what age did they start? I don't mean when you could leave them in the tub alone, but when could you tell them to go take a shower/bath, and they could pretty much do it all on their own.

(The twins are almost 4, for reference, and I don't think they could do it at all. At least, not do it and get anywhere close to clean.)
