@MamaBear87: This is true , but a well placed trash can with a lid can solve that problem. So I have three children the first was able to wipe with out follow up by 2.5 and was potty trained at 18 months girl. Second was potty trained at 3 years able to wipe with out follow up by 5 boy. Third was potty trained at 2 able to wipe with out follow up at 3 also a girl. Totally depends on the child. Lots of repetition and follow up, also easier when they have a good step stool so they are comfortable balancing on the potty and supplies with in reach.

My 3 year old tries to wipe, but I always follow up with a wipe (or 5).

My older son stopped asking for help around age 5 -- I stopped checking around then too.

I'm still working on this with my 5.5 year old boy. We've taught him to wipe, check the TP, and keep wiping until the TP is clean, but we usually do one more swipe to make sure it's clean. He will do it by himself if he goes at school, but he had a bad accident at school a few months ago and is really not confident about being able to get himself completely clean.

@cabbagerose: @Mrs. Microscope: from experience, flush able wipes are not really flush able and will eventually clog your toilet. The plumber who fixed our clog said tp is the only thing you can flush without issue because it dissolves

My 2 year old DD likes to wipe herself first, then we wipe again. She does a good job about 80% of the time! We use "poop wipes" as she calls them, which are the cottonelle flushable wipes. I get them in bulk on Amazon subscribe and save, and we have a pack in each bathroom and in the diaper bag with her travel potty seat.

Flushable wet wipes help make sure that everything gets cleaner and they are thicker than TP so less likely to get on their hands.

Knock on wood, but I've literally never had skid marks on LOs undies. I taught her how to wipe from behind, check the paper (to see when it's clean), wipe again, check the paper--repeat till paper is clean. At home, I still wipe one last time to check but she's been wiping alone at school and with our sitter for the last 1.5 years and she's 4.5 years old.

My DS is 4 3/4 and JUST started doing it consistently on his own within the last month. He turns 5 in two months and will be starting Kindergarten and I wanted him to be able to do so before school started. They still help him in Pre-K if he asks but I don't want them to at this point.

My 4 year old (Oct 31 bday) does it on her own at school(they will help if she needs it), and I do it at home. Her old teacher wouldn’t help wipe when she was only 3 and I had to talk to the daycare director about it.

After a year or so (around 4) she was wiping by herself, but then she was doing a really bad job of it and getting nasty skid marks on her undies, so now I’m back to doing it. She’s 4.5 now and i feel like she should be doing it herself but I also don’t want her running around with poop in her underwear. I’m less worried about the hands part since it doesn’t seem to have been a problem and she’s usually good about washing them after.

At what age did your LO try to wipe? And at what age we’re they able to do it themselves. I’m such a germaphobe and don’t want poop to get on her hands while she’s learning. But I know she has to do it eventually.
