My 15 month old has never had problems with her ears. She wouldn't take a paci or anything and was fine :) good luck!

We had 2 flights recently -- 1.5 hrs followed by 4 hours. He was fine. A handful but fine in the ear dept -- he was 14.5 months at the time.

I think you'll be fine - as others have said, any chewing/swallowing/sucking will work.

Swallowing of any sort, or if you can get her to yawn (a stretch, I know) is good. It's the movement of her jaw that will help, which is why people chew gum on descents.

We just use a straw cup filled with water. Whenever I feel the need to equalize my ears then I offer him a sip. 99% of the time he takes a sip...it's like he knows! (We've been on 9 flights and using the straw cup instead of nursing was way easier because I could only get him to latch for so long).

Oh and the reason I took a direct flight was that I was worried about her patience in layovers!

I flew with my LO at 2 months and I took a direct flight. She was eating during takeoff once, but wide awake not eating during our return takeoff. Landing, was asleep both ways. It did not seem to bother her at all. The only thing I noticed was that during the takeoff where she was awake and not eating, right when my ears popped, her eyes got really wide and she opened her mouth and looked at me. I was sure site was going to scream but she didn't!

I would have her take frequent sips out of a straw cup. DS has had ear problems a few times on planes, and more for the landing than the take off. If we have him sip water it usually helps right away.

If you can, just pinch their nose shut, they will breathe out and it will cause their ears to equalize. Any snack is good, as chewing also equalizes.

we have flown with LO at different ages (4m, 7m, 8m, 12m) and he's never had a problem yet! (dh and i also never feel the pressure either, unless we are already stuffed up with a cold).

i think that unless she has a bad cold she should be okay :) and eating/drinking anything will help -- the swallowing motion is what helps to 'clear' the ears, i believe :)!

i hope the flights go well for you!!

I have to fly to Ohio next weekend short notice for a family matter. The direct flight is $200 more than the flight with a connection (which is already almost $500). I wasn't worried if it was just going to be a direct flight but now, knowing we're going to have to take 4 flights total, I'm starting to worry...

I don't mind flying. I don't mind flying with her in my lap. I just worry about her ears since she won't know how to equalize them during pressure changes. She no longer drinks bottles, won't breastfeed with distractions but she is drinking out of straw cups.

She's 14 months, will we have a problem? Should I start worrying now? :)
