@Mae: can you set her on a soft blanket? I had this puffy one I used all the time at that stage. So she fell, but not on tile, basically

@twodoghouse: Fiona is the same as Blake! Except she doesn't just topple she will often fling herself backwards! I do actually try to stop that bc it seems like it would hurt to fall back that hard. But if she leans forward too far and falls on her face I usually let her. She has 0 sense of self preservation. Lol

I let her go from an early age. She learns really quick. Lord knows she got plenty of bruises while learning to walk lol. I don't make a fuss unless she's obviously crying. A mark or bruise, meh. Preventing makes the action more desirable as she gets older lol

Blake started sitting recently and he's very good at getting into a sitting position but can only stay for a limited amount of time before he falls right over and he has no instinct to protect his head! Alice always caught herself or held her head up so we were totally stunned when he started falling over. I still try to catch him as much as possible, but I have two mobile babies to chase and sometimes I can't get to him because I'm trying to keep Alice from eating dog food or something. This thread is making me feel a little better about that!

I would never let my kid fall down the stairs or anything, but I am not a hover-parent! I let him roll into things and take some bumps when he was crawling. When he fell while walking we would cheer and act like it was fun, so he wouldn't get too sad. It worked well with my son, he is a pretty tough kid, and got coordinated really quickly! I am hoping the same tactic works well with my daughter.

My DH and I seriously disagree on this. He wants to protect her from EVERYTHING, whereas I'm fine with some bumps and bruises as long as she's not in real danger. I think that deep down, he knows I have a point but when it comes right down to it, he can't let go. It makes me a little crazy.

Okay glad I'm not the only one! It's so weird to be a mom and realize that you have really almost no experience with children lol. And I'm not really a "book mom" so I just sort of do whatever makes sense. Glad I'm not horrible for letting her do her thing and (hopefully soon) figure out that she should watch where she is rolling! hah

I try to make the environment as safe as possible, but other than that he's mostly on his own. Rolls over on a plastic toy? Oh well. The only thing I get nervous about is his play kitchen, which my parents made me paranoid that he's going to trip and fall while one of doors are open and smack his face into it.

The only time I intervene is if she could seriously injure herself (e.g., near a sharp corner, by the stairs, edge of the bed/couch). She is into head banging on the walls these days, and I let her bang her head all she wants because she's got to learn on her own!

As a nanny I did what @LuLu Mom said, and I plan to do the same with my own. They'll figure it out, and as long as it's not going to cause a serious injury I'm not going to worry too much.

As soon as she was mobile enough to get hurt, I tried to have a hands-off approach as much as possible. And if she did get hurt, I tried to give it a second to gauge whether it was serious or not before swooping in.

I pretty much let her do her thing (pending serious injury) from the start. She used to crawl under the table and "get stuck" and I figured she would learn eventually to not do it...took awhile but she finally stopped doing it. I'm all for allowing a child to be independent & find out for themselves at any age.

T is 10 months and I've finally stopped intervening. Lol I was a hover mom for a while but you're right, he won't learn to not roll into things if I keep running interference.

So my LO is 7mo and is reallllly into rolling lately. She can get going with some force and once or twice a day she rolls into something and smacks some part of her body (generally her head). She either rolls onto a hard plastic toy, or she rolls into the coffee table leg, or the book case, or the wall... etc. About half the time she cries. Sometimes she has a red mark for a few minutes (never blood/bruises).

So far I've mostly been letting her go because I know she isn't really hurting herself and I feel like she'll never learn to stop rolling into things if I never let her roll into things. But then I feel bad because it upsets her and I wonder if she's too young for that sort of cause/effect learning and I should be intervening more.

So... how much intervening did you do when your LO was rolling? And I presume crawling/walking/etc. Did you prevent all non-serious bumps and bruises you could, or just let LO go and hope they figure it out sooner rather than later?
