A teacher I knew encouraged taking young kids to concerts, talking about instruments, in general exposing them to music and letting them get interested naturally.. then start lessons when they're older like 6.

My daughter's teacher has a strict rule that she does not take students before age 6...my daughter was almost 7 and it was a great time to start!

My mother and I both taught and played music, and I really think 5-6 is a great age to start piano lessons, but that it would be great to do some group music classes like music together or gymboree music before that. That is what I plan to do with my daughter. She is 2 now and I sit with her at the piano and let her bang on it sometimes.

We still have not done anything related to piano lessons, I should explore it this school year. My son will be 6 turning 7 and he's really interested in music. We listen to instrumental music at night and he's gotten quite good at identifying the instruments and he can repeat beats and patterns.

I think it's time, lol. I might actually do the lessons along with him.

I actually just asked a reputable music school here what the ideal age is and they said 5. They offer lessons before that but she was being honest and said she really doesn't think it's worthwhile till at least 5.

@travellingbee: Music together is a class that's available all over, it's birth to age 5 and it introduces music concepts but it's not piano specific. Definitely look into it, they usually offer a free trial class. My daughter and I love going and it's impressive what she's picked up.

You can start at 5 but they are still really wiggly and don't usually have a good attention span. So unless you think your could is ready, I would wait. Also, the younger they are, the more you need to practice with them every night. I like starting students at 6 or 7. If you want to do music before that, I think Music Together is an actual class that introduces rhythm instruments and singing as a general music readiness program.

I started Suzuki at age 5 and I grew up with friends who started at 4. They always seemed to have benefited from starting earlier!

I started my daughter this year at 4. She's doing great and having fun.

My Mum is a registered piano teacher and she generally doesn't take on students until they're at least six or seven. In her experience a child who's slightly older picks it up much faster due to having better cognitive skills plus better numeracy and literacy, and most kids are at the same level by the time they're eight regardless of when they started.

I would wait until at least age 5. I taught music lessons to several children, and the 3-4 year olds didn't seem to get much other than having fun - which is fine, but I wouldn't want to throw a lot of money or energy into it at such a young age.

I have a friend who started one child at 3 and the next at 5 and her take was that the younger child basically took two years to learn what the older child learned in just a couple of months so she basically wasted over a year and a half worth of lesson fees. It just took so much longer for her to pick stuff up when she was little.

The piano teacher we will use highly recommends doing music together classes before piano, she says the students that have been through that program are way more prepared and learn faster. Maybe it would be worth looking into those?

I've heard several music teachers say it's helpful to be able to read first, to help with music reading. So 5-6 probably. I'm hoping to start around her 6th bday, she'll be 5.5 at start of kinder but I'm hesitant to start anything new then.

I'm sure it depends on the kid, but a handful of the people I know who are above average at piano started at age 5. I also started at age 5 - my mom says I begged her for lessons - and it worked out well for me!

I know I started lessons at 8 or 9. I wish I had started earlier but overall it was really enjoyable.

I have two friends who teach lessons, one will start kids at 5 and the other will start at first grade (so basically 6).

I feel like if you have a mature 3 year old, that would be an okay time to start. We do Suzuki method and they can start piano at 3 if they are ready. 4-5 would definitely be fine to start also if your child is older.

(Thought I posted this already but can't find it so I guess I didn't! Frazzled mom, here!)

We have a piano and I want to offer lessons for my kids, but I am wondering what age it would be feasible and not a waste of money. We did swim lessons too early as it turns out and I'm annoyed at all the money we wasted trying to teach him to swim before he was ready. (at 2 and 3-- now at 4, he's really getting it).

My boys are 4 and 18 months. I can't remember when I started lessons as a kid. Anyone with a music background have any thoughts about it?
