We have a dog and two cats right now. I hope our daughter is not that into the dog, because I don't really like having one, too much work to travel or do anything else. So I hope we can move to a dog-free home after this one. Of course, my husband may think otherwise.

Our LO will be involved with the family pets as soon as they are born. I think we will always have a dog, but after our current cat passes, we might not replace him.

Well we already have 4 dogs 4 cats. So yeah....When they are old enough to help feed and pick up poop etc...We would consider letting them get there "own" pet. Something small though because its not like we want to take in anymore dogs or cats besides the ones we foster.

@cupcakemama: Good to hear. I am most worried about when LO enters the grabby-hands stage to be honest. Kitty is not always good about her claws/teeth when she is irritated. But, so far she’s actually been good with any children we have over (she likes them to chase her, like a dog!)

@yoursilverlining: we have a cat too. She was fine with LO. She seemed interested but aware that LO was a baby and she needed to give space. Now she is just trying to evade LO's reaching hands!

maybe towards the end of elementary? they have to promise to try their best to take care of it though. probably a dog.

or as soon as their born if we decide to keep our current dog (depends on if we buy a house or rent one in a few months).... rental won't let us keep the dog.

They'll always have one because we currently have two dogs and one cat. Once they die (morbid I know) we plan to have one dog at a time. Three pets are too much.

@lemondrop: Thanks for the info! We were thinking of bringing a blanket to the cat to sniff after LO is born and before we come home from the hospital. She has been super loving to me since I got pregnant…but I want to try to make the big transition as easy as possible for humans and animal. :D

@yoursilverlining: We played the baby crying sounds several times off the computer and iphone. We also brought home his clothes and blankets the day before he came home. Once he was home we showed him to each one, then let the cats hide, and had one of us giving the dog attention while the other held the baby.

We mostly just let them all adjust at their own pace, and gave them attention when the baby went to bed. It took a few weeks for them to forgive me for bringing him home, none wanted to cuddle me for a few weeks- they all went to my husband.

We already have a cat, and plan to get a dog anytime after LO is born and we’re in our new house (with yard!). The timing of getting our dog will depend on when our forever friend appears at the shelter.

@Lemondrop – did you do anything in particular to help your cats adjust to baby, or just let them adjust at their own pace? I’m not sure what I can do to help my cat adjust – she likes children alright, but hates all grownups except my husband and I, so we’re a little nervous of jealousy issues.

At birth, as we have a dog and 3 cats. It was the same way at my parents house when I was born. My husband got his first dog at 6 years old and his first cat at 23 years old.

One cat has already claimed herself as Cam's kitty- she sleeps on the changing table during the day and sits on the recliner with us during the late night and early morning feedings. It took the cats a month to adjust to him.

Our dog is already a better mother than I will ever be, he loves the baby and has to find him if he cries. He also has to check out the carseat every time we come home to make sure we brought back his baby. It took the dog 1 day to adjust to him.

My parents let my brother and I have fish and a rabbit when we were in elementary school because they were fairly easy to care for. But they wouldn't let us have a dog or a cat until we were in junior high because they didn't want to be the ones taking care of it all the time.

When do you think you would let your kids have a dog or a cat?
