DD will be 5 years 8 months when she starts Kindergarten, and DS will be 5 years 7 months.

But Kindergarten will actually be less hours for them since I'm a WOHM/WAHM, so their daycare/preschool has them there for 8-9 hour very full days, and they'll only be in kindergarten for 3.5-4 hours.

C is starting full-time preschool in August, at 3 years and 4 months old. I think it's still fairly play-based, so Im not sure where it would fall on the scale. Her birthday is in April, so she'll be on the younger end of the scale as well.

She will start kindergarten at 5.

She'll start private preschool 2 mornings a week when she's just past 3, and universal public pre-k five full days a week just past four, unless we can't get a seat, in which case we will have to go private. To prep for preK, I'll probably send her either 3 full days or 5 mornings to her private preschool's summer camp. We will see what the teacher recommends to help with the transition.

The kindergarten cutoff in my area is September 1, and my LO's birthday is September 3, so he'll be going when he is just about 6 years old. It's full-day kindergarten. I'm not sure if we'll do preschool or just daycare before that - if we keep with a nanny long-term, then he'll probably do preschool starting around 3 or 4 years old.

LO has to go to a special preschool that I'm pretty sure is a full day, 5 day a week program due to the intense programming they do. So he'll be 3 years 3 months when he starts full time. I'm not thrilled about this school being an hour from our home and making the choice between driving him and putting him on the bus at 3 years old! We might go 2 days a week at 2 years old for a toddler program to get him used to it.

We live in a town with free public Prek3 and Prek4. If LO gets into one of the locations that's closer to home, she'll go at just 3 years, 2 months old. It's a full day from 8-2:45, but she'll also go to before care and after care, so she'll be there from 7:30 am-4:15 pm or so.

Pretty much the same as daycare hours--I know they still have naps at Pre-k 3, not sure about pre-k4.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: @autumnlove: @mrsjyw: my sister is a November baby too, and she was tested by the public system to start school early. She passed every test with flying colors, except she couldn't skip rope, so they didn't let her. So ridiculous! She was so much older than most of her class. I hope since then, they've changed some of the rules and let kids start when it's a best fit for them.

She'll be about 5.5 when she starts actual kindergarten, but she'll be in full-time daycare from age 7 months on. So I would think she will be used to spending all day in a structured setting outside the home by then.

For us, it totally depends on the lottery. In our city, there are lotteries for preschool (age 3) as well as junior K (age 4). However, it is likely we won't get in and she will probably start regular K closer to age 6 (she is an early October baby, so we missed the cutoff by about a month).

@Rainbow Sprinkles: DS is a November baby too. The cut off is Sept 1, but our state mandates that if parents write in before June 1 that year that they want to enroll their child who will be 5 by Dec 1, they're allowed to do so. Even if the school recommends that they wait, it's parental discretion!

@Rainbow Sprinkles: the private school near us takes kids at 4 years and 10 months. They said LO might qualify at 4 years and 8 months if she passes several tests on top of their entrance interview and test.... I think we will just go the public route!

My town has free public preschool starting at age 3. His birthday is in March, so he'll be exactly 3.5 when the school year starts. It's full time and a 6-hour day. I assume we will use it since it's FREE. If we have a second child, then it'll probably be good for him to get a break from his sibling. And if we don't, then we can save significantly on the cost of a nanny by only hiring someone for the afternoon.

It sounds like the issue the format of the school. If there is a preponderance of free and outdoor time, I think a 4 year-old could handle a full day. If it's mostly classroom-based activities (planned centers and workshops, for example), my opinion changes. I think transitions between subjects/areas of focus are really tough for 4 year olds, but I have a sample size of one. ;)

ETA: Actually, it sounds like the issue isn't the format so much as the time away from family. In that respect, I agree with you 100%. Four year olds absolutely enjoy hanging out with their family and I think it's better for them than formal school. :)

I'm so jealous of everyone who has the option to wait a year! We legally could defer DD's Reception (age 4) placement until the following year, but unless there are special educational needs, the school won't let you put them in Reception at age five - they have to go straight into Year One with all the other kids the same age as them....so the point of holding them back is pretty much moot. And that is of course if there even is a place for them in the Year One class! It is beyond frustrating. I just don't think a four year old, who could otherwise be home with her parents, needs to be in full time school shortly after she turns four :-(

Full day will be when DS starts kindergarten. He's an early August baby and the school cut off is 8/31, so we haven';t decided if we will send him at 5 or hold him a year until age 6. The norm where we live seems to be to hold young 5's, (especially boys) until they are 6.

um 12 weeks. I consider day care school since it is education based.

She will start preschool at 3.5 at day care. Pre-k is 7:15-2:00ish, and then daycare for after care (age 4.5). Will start kindergarten at 5.5 and it pretty much the same schedule at pre-k.
