I grew up with fairly strict parents, but they did not censor music/art type things, and we don't plan to either.

That being said, we don't listen to hardcore rap or anything super ridiculously explicit either.

I think music is about expressing yourself (both DH and I are musicians) and not censored.

I don’t know; I guess I sort of already do in a way. I’m not so worried about the occasional swear word; but since having a little girl I’m a lot more conscious about demeaning lyrics and songs, and will change the station if a demeaning song comes on as I don’t want to listen to it myself. I don’t want her hearing stuff that’s nasty or demeaning to women, or discounts all women as hoes/bitches/etc.

Songs like David Guetta w/ Akon “sexy chick” drive.me.up.the.wall; but that could also be because they are just crappy, crappy music.

That said, we're not switching to kid stations. There is plenty of great music available that isn't obnoxious "kid stuff".

I was shocked to find out that LO learned many of the words to Let It Go all by herself (she just turned 2) so I think she'd be able to repeat some undesirable words too if she were listening to my music. We listen to children's music in the car. I have found some that is tolerable so I don't really mind it! She likes singing along which I think is the cutest thing.

@looch: If it's the song I'm thinking of, it's not a bad song at all. I play it for K to dance! ;)

I probably wouldn't play hardcore rap or hip hop with a lot of fuzz words, but everything in moderation should be fine. We have friends who have taught their kids to just not sign along the bad words. A video of girls singing along to "It's Britney -----" particularly sticks out in my mind. They know better than to sing that word, but they love the song.

@Mrs. Lion: there 's an option on Pandora where you can choose to filter out songs with explicit lyrics.

I listen to country music and the indie station b/c i don't want L to repeat lots of pop music lyrics.

Good thing I only listen to country music and 70s & 80s :)

You could do a LO playlist? I would say once when they start repeated undesired words.

I don't really ever plan to change the music I listen to all that much. I like variety so I generally listen to the radio. DH is big on downloading music to his phone and listening to it in his car. I joke with him that pretty soon he's going to need to buy the edited versions. I would just rather DS not be parroting explicit lyrics everywhere when he's like 4, lol.

I don't really know. I think some censorship is good, but my parents went way overboard with us & DH is of the mind that we let her listen to/watch whatever she wants as long as she is old enough to understand that we don't repeat those things. I'm really not sure what we will do about music. I'm also one of those people that really wants their kids to love the same music they love (ha!) & so it makes not want to ever censor that. I guess we'll just see when we get there.

I remember my parents getting in a fight about Madonna! How she was a bad role model and whatnot. (Said my mom!)

Anyway ever since my son started singing snippets of songs, I've gotten more careful. In the car, with songs I know, sometimes I will turn it down for a couple seconds if I'm on the ball. Or listen to safe music! My son is almost 4 and my daughter almost 2 and they definitely understand and repeat certain words. In that Pitbull song Fireball, my son always recognizes the word booty and says, "HE SAID BOOTY!" but he thinks it's funny and I know he doesn't have any notions about sexual booty-slapping so... that's a pretty tame song compared to many!

I think it all depends how verbal they are. Between 18 months and age 2 you're starting to take some risks.

LO is big into repeating everything she hears and she's very into music so I try to only play appropriate stuff for her. I definitely had to stop listening to howard stern in the car a while ago but it's harder for her to pick out naughty words in songs still. (19 mos)

@Mrs. Lion: it's still one of me and my sister's favorite memories of childhood. She even let us roll the windows down and blast Shoop while driving through our town.

We also watched MTV that we weren't "supposed to" when we were little. It would be pretty hard shield kids from everything ;)

@hotchildinthecity: haha i have vivid memories of getting to watch a madonna concert on tv when i was maybe 4? My older cousin didn't get to watch it because her parents said no, and i thought i was the coolest ;) didn't catch on to the meanings of all those songs until i was much much much older.

Honestly? Probably wont. I grew up listening to the same stuff my parents liked (classic rock) and watching MTV music videos with my brothers in the early 90s... DH likes to listen to Disney music in the car with her sometimes, but mostly we just listen to what we like. Im a rock/indie/alt kind of person, so Im sure she hears some cursing now and then.

She probably hears worse just around our family and friends anyway.

So yesterday, my mom was telling me that my son likes this song that has lyrics that go "the base, the base, the base."

My husband finds it on his phone and turns out the unedited version features sh*t several times (at least that's only what I heard from the other room). The radio version is edited, but still, I am not a fan and I've asked my mom to be a little more careful about the music in the car.

The problem is he repeats everything, so.....I don't want to be limiting, but at the same time, I want him to learn that there are other ways to express himself.

My husband listens to unedited hip hop, so once our future LOs start repeating words he will likely switch to his 80s electro pop and rock music when little ears are nearby. The music I listen to is suggestive, but kids don't know what that means. Nonetheless, I will probably be the mom listening to contemporary gospel/ praise music, kiddie songs, and uptempo instrumentals. Can't go wrong with those styles.

I grew up listening to mostly music that my parents liked, and i think it really shaped my musical taste, even as an adult. Lo is 18 months and we still listen to my favorite pandora stations in the car or while we are at home. These are not necessarily *not* child friendly, but there is the occasional word here or there that i wouldnt want lo repeating.

Im not big on censorship anyway (i doubt hearing a word in a song will have any affect on him, even as a child, aside from him possibly repeating it).

Is there an age where you would be more careful to filter? The thought of switching to kid stations makes me want to cry.
