It would totally depend on the childcare center. The local community center where we'll be moving advertises that they have childcare, but that they will only ever staff it with ONE employee. I'd be worried that I'd drop off my tiny little one and 3 toddlers would come shortly thereafter. If it was better staffed and they held themselves to safe ratios, I don't know why I wouldn't take him at the minimum age! (Except for that I hate working out, haha)

I'd say too. My mom even offered to BUY me a membership to the gym, but i declined because I didn't want her in there yet. She goes to daycare, but I've worked there for 2 yrs so feel safer.I am just scared of the gym for now.

These comments are making me feel better about considering it! I'm heading over to the gym this morning to check it out and will decide then. It's a pretty swanky gym/spa and the crèche is only open for three hours per day so I'm hoping it's of a good standard! As long as it's clean and run by competent staff, I think I'll give it a go. LO is a pretty chill baby but she's never away from me - probably all the more reason to give this a go! I hope this works out as I really want to work out again!

wow... maybe I'm a bad mom but I dropped him off the day he turned 6 weeks (the minimum age!). I was anxious to work out again and I had seen the childcare center and it was really great. They have a separate space for non-walkers and have more individualized care. Lots of swings, cribs, jumpers, etc. The people who work there are really nice too.

They operate on a paging system, and so they just page me if they need anything.

Also - their "rules" are stricter than a day care - they won't change diapers, heat bottles, food, and babies aren't allowed without socks on - all for health/safety reasons. So if I bring in a bottle, it has to be warmed. If he has a dirty diaper, they page me down to change it.

I felt comfortable with it. I work out for an hour so it was a great setup for me. He is 8 months and still goes consistently.

The baby room at my traditional gym has two attendants and only a couple of kids in it at a time, including newborns. They only offer one or two classes at a time. If something happens, they just come snag you out of a class, no big deal. The gym isn't so big they can't find you with a quick glance around. And you're there for an hour, max, so it's not a huge deal, to me.

The one lady who just had a baby at my crossfit gym just brings her daughter in her carrier and she sits in it and watches us for the hour. The baby's perfectly content with all the music and people moving around. Often, our coach will go scoop up the baby and teach class while holding her and playing with her :P

Probably any time after twelve weeks? You're right there should they need you. Our gym is a really nice YMCA that's specifically geared towards families though so they have a super nice child care center. If I didn't belong to such a family friendly gym I would probably feel differently.

I agree with @sarac that it seems to work earlier rather than later for me. When they are small, they don't even realize you are gone and may just sit there and play with toys, but once they are walking and know you are gone, it is much more upsetting. I can't even imagine leaving my 4 yr old, I know she would freak out!

I'm a crazy person.... probably because my lo has such bad stranger anxiety so I don't like to leave her with anyone but her grandparents. Otherwise its just too stressful for everyone involved. It just so happens my mil owns a gym so she could watch her if I wanted to work out. But I can't anyway due to migraines.

The earlier the better, imho. I've rarely left my 13 month old, and she is hugely attached to me, so it's really hard. I think it's far better to get them used to being left in safe hands from time to time.

Now, if you just don't trust the daycare, then forget it. But I think any age baby is ok to leave in a safe care situation for a short time.

I voted 4-5 months because its only like an hour right? If it were any longer: probably more like 9m. But the way I see it: if you feed and change her, then drop her off napping....she will stay that way until you get back and you can get in 45-60m workout without worrying about her.

Huh. I guess I am the only one who went back so early... but I needed it for my sanity! Plus the caregivers there are GREAT and they really do their best to not interrupt my workout and only come get me if he cries for 15 minutes straight.

I would have much lower standards for a gym nursery than a regular daycare, just because 1) they would only be there for less than an hour at a time, and 2) if they were upset, I would have them come get me, it's not like they would need to call me at work and have me drive over.

I've thought about this a lot because my gym seems to have a pretty nice little nursery. I think I would try to time it with naps when they were young so I could just stroll them in and hopefully be done when they wake up. Then once they are able to play and stuff, just tell them to have a low threshold for when to come get me. I don't know about specific ages though.

I was going to go back to my gym at 6 weeks but *I* wasn't cleared to workout till 10 weeks--so that's when I first left LO with their daycare. When he screams too much they come and get me because I am right down the hall. And I think he loves it because it is different from home.
I go for 45min to 1 hour at a time.

ETA he is 5 months now and LOVES the gym now--they have all kinds of different toys and different people. I really think it's good for him. :)

My gym only allows children 6 months and older in the childcare center, but LO is 5 months old now and I definitely think she would be ready. She is a very calm baby, though, and tends to be more than happy to hang out on her play mat for a good while. If I had a higher needs baby, I might think differently as I'm not sure gym childcare centers can really provide a ton of one-on-one attention.

Also, for the most part I go to the gym for 45 minute classes, so that helps me feel more comfortable. Over an hour might be different?

I'm looking at joining a gym again as I really miss my fitness classes, but am stuck on the issue of childcare! I could workout in the morning or evening before/after DH is at work, but there are some complications with either of these scenarios that make it unlikely to work long term.

So I'm left with the option to put LO in the gym crèche whilst I work out; the problem is she's just turned. Four months old and i'm not sure I'm comfortable with that! I haven't been to check it out yet, but are gym childcare centres generally up to similar standard as full time childcare centres? Would you feel comfortable leaving a 4 month old in your gym crèche? Am I being a completely paranoid parent here? Any thoughts, experiences or stories would be welcome!
