It's never too early! Luckily I have a sister with a 3 year old and 1 on the way so I get a lot of info and honest advice from her.

All of the things there are to learn is so overwhelming. I try and take some time every day to do reading on a different topic. Alot of it is going to be learn as you go though! There's no manual for raising a child!

I started researching once I hit my second trimester - that was when I really started to feel OK about the pregnancy and not constantly worrying that something would happen.

I did some research prior to TTC since I was ready years before my husband was. Once I got the positive test, it kicked into overdrive.

The beginning of my third tri I started researching all that. We took books on vacation and read all we could. I also read a lot of gear guides from HB.

I probably researched sleep most heavily.

I was totally clueless! I didn't know you were supposed to start prenatals months ahead of time until I went in to get my IUD removed. I got my first and only pregnancy book (Mayo Clinic Guide to Healthy Pregnancy) around 8 weeks and slowly worked my way through that. I wanted to read Ina May's Guide to Childbirth but I was still waiting on a copy from the library when my baby arrived. I *did* finally get my library copy of The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding and have really enjoyed it, but didn't read any of it before the baby arrived (then again, I already knew I wanted to breastfeed and had already looked at a bunch of stuff about it online). I'm still pretty clueless about lots of baby stuff but seem to be doing fine with advice from my mom, common sense, and doing whatever works for us!

I had done a lot of research on random things before getting pregnant-- I was ready to try a few months before our agreed upon TTC start date, so researching made me feel better. I'm a weirdo. So I had picked out our hospital and had a rough birth plan (all natural, because if I could do it, why not, and I didn't like the idea of being stuck in the bed with an epidural if I could help, if you were wondering :) ) I knew I wanted to breastfeed and had read a ton on here about it, plus talked to my sister a lot when she was doing it, but that's about all the research I did on that until she was here-- when I started obsessively googling and researching during our marathon late night nursing sessions!

A lot of the other stuff we took as it came. Like, the 12 week u/s, we got mostly because we wanted to see the baby sooner than 20 weeks. We pretty much signed up for whatever tests seemed to be the norm and didn't give it much thought past that. Parenting philosophies I felt like, and still feel like now that C is 5 weeks old, I would do what felt right to me in the moment, not what one book says I should do.

At this point I think they only things you need to worry about are picking a doctor/hospital, if you haven't already, and making sure you know what to avoid during pregnancy particularly meds (basically don't take anything without asking your doctor). You've got plenty of time to think about the other stuff.

So, I'm only 5.5 weeks but I feel like a complete moron. I don't really know what to expect with pregnancy. I mean-- I know generally what to avoid and that unicorns will start singing in my second trimester. But in terms of what decisions there are to make, which scans to get, which tests to ask for, etc--- no clue.

I know less than that about birth. I'm generally aware that some people do natural but I don't really understand why.

And then there is the baby. No clue. Breastfeeding? Nope. General philosophies on sleeping or feeding or raising the tiny human? None.

On one hand-- I feel like I should probably get moving on figuring all this out. At least the pregnancy bit. But on the other, it still feels SO early.

When did everyone else start figuring all these things out? Were you all up on the info before you got your BFP or were you totally clueless like me-- and if so, when did you start getting books? (And what books should I get??)
