@Anagram: ditto to this. I actually took mine after only a day of low grade fever last week. He was also rubbing his ears, and I wanted to make sure we didn't have an ear infection on our hands. My guy rarely gets a fever so it's generally a result of something.

If my LO has a 3 day fever (even a low grade fever), I take her to the doctor so I can find out the underlying reason. If it's just a virus, great, then I know...if it's something else like an ear or throat infection, then they can get treatment.

I generally don't give it until the temperature is near 102. That said, if it's100.5 or 101 and he's miserable or obviously in pain (like from teething), then I go ahead and give it.

A fever is the body's natural defense at fighting infection. We only give Tylenol for discomfort.

@SweetiePie: yup. I always try to remembER that their body is learning how to fight that infection. So it's best to let their body learn how to do that.

Like the others I go more by how she seems than the temp- if it's 100.5 and she seems out of sorts and uncomfortable, I'll give it, 101 and happy, I don't. Over 102.5 or so id probably give it even if she seemed fine though (even though even that might now be necessary).

But if she's had a low fever all day and is just a little out of sorts, I often do give it before bed. I feel like even with a low fever it can just make you feel crummy and I don't want that to keep her up, when she needs the sleep to fight off whatever little bug it is.

@MamaCate: @Mrs. Deer: @BananaPancakes: Thanks! Yes I agree. He has also been fussier than usual but we are in the yucky midst of transitioning from 3 to 2 naps so I think that might be why. So I didn't want to rely solely on that for administering Tylenol, but he also felt a little warm. Even though 100.5 isn't that high I was thinking better safe than sorry. But after some quick googling (maybe should have done that first) I found this guideline from the Mayo Clinic:
http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/fever/in-depth/fever/art-20050997

So it seems that a fever reducer may not be necessary until you hit 102 (for his age of 7 months). First time mom! Now I know :-)

I don't give anything for just a fever until it gets up over 101. But if she's cranky and seems to be in pain, I'll give it regardless of temperature.

100.4 (38 c) is the cutoff in our house. But I agree with previous that behavior is a consideration too.

I think it's better to treat the symptoms and not the number. If they're hot and happy then great, but if they have a fever and seem miserable then I definitely dose out some Tylenol.

Wondering at what temp you give your LO Tylenol/acetaminophen/etc? Mine has had 100.5 temp (which I know isn't that high, but higher than normal) for the last 3 days. I have been giving it only at night before bed just because I worry about it spiking in his sleep or something (which may or may not be a rational concern, ha. I have no clue!)
